Baby Frou-Frou Preemie Hat
Even the tiniest baby needs a little froufrou! This hat is super stretchy, thanks to the yarn, and super quick to make. Change up the yarn, hook size, or follove the instructions for increasing (repeating round 4) to make this simple hat in a variety of sizes. Finished Size: 12?" circumference, 4”’ deep before cuffing
Yarn: Cascade Fixation, 98% cotton, 2% elastic, 100yds/50g Gauge: 5 st x 4 rows = 1" in hdc Hook: D (3.25 mm) or size needed for gauge
Pattern Notes:
Do not count the chain-2 start of each round as a stitch. Join each round with slip stitch in the first half double crochet of the round (skipping over the chain-2 start). Do not turn at the end of each round (except when making the shellborder) Round 1: Ch 2, work 7 hdc in 2nd chain from hook (or work 7 hdc in a magic ring), join with a sl st in first hdc. 1 2: Ch 2, 3 hdc in each stitch around, join with sl st in first hdc - 21 st Round 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each stitch around, join with sl st in first hdc - 42 st. Round 4: Ch 2, [hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st] 6 times, join with sl st in first hdc - 48 st. NOTE: If you want to make a larger hat, repeat round 4, increasing 6 stitches per round, until the crown of the hat is the size desired. Rounds 5 - 14: Ch 2, hdc around, join with sl st in first hdc. NOTE: Add additional rounds here as needed for fit. At the end of round 14 (or when desired depth), join with a slip stitch, DO NOT CHAIN and . . . wait for it . . . TURN! (So, the front side of the shells will show when the brim is rolled up). Round 15: [skip 2 st, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 st, sl st in next st] around, fasten off.
To make the "frou-frou'"
Make a magic ring, chain 9, sl st in 2nd chain from hook and in remaining 7, sl st into magic ring (one frou made), make 10 more in the same fashion (chaining out, slip stitching back, slip stitching into ring), varying the number of chains between 6 - 10. Fasten off leaving a 3" tail. Tighten the magic ring as tight as you can. Sew the frou-frou SECURELY to the top of the hat, making sure to finish off on the outside of the hat (no knots or bumps next to your little one's head!)
