Yellou Pink and Sparkly
Funky Santa
By Janet McMahon
Christmas is coming and what better way to anticipate the fun than to make your very own Funky Santa. Here is a pattern I have just made that I would liketo sharewith you.

I used: Yarn - Double knitting oddments in pink, red, burgundy, black, beige, yellow and lilac. White boucle yarn - Sirdar Snowflake. Why be traditional - what interesting colours could you make him in? Hooks - 3mm and 4.50mm. Notions - toy stuffing, 3 buttons.

Beard
For the beard I used Sirdar Snowflake and a much bigger hook. It isn't easy to use as you can't see the individual stitches or keep an accurate count so some flexibility is needed when making this. Overall you are aiming for a semicircular type shape that will tuck under the sides of the hat and cover the lower face. Here is ‘roughly' how I did it.

With white boucle yarn and 4.50mm hook chain 22. Turn. 1st row: dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 7 chain, [dc2tog] 2 times, 1 dc into each of next 7 chain, 2 dc tog. Turn. (18dc) 2nd row: dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 5 dc, [dc2tog] 2 times, 1 dc into each of next 5 dc, 2 dc tog. Turn. (14dc) 3rd row: dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 10 dc, 2 dc tog. Turn. (12dc) 4th row: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end. Turn. 5th row: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end. Fasten off. Sew beard to face and embroider eyes and mouth. Attach hat to head, covering ends of beard.

Legs
With black double knitting and 3mm hook, chain 10. 1st round: 1dc into 2nd chain from hook. 1 dc into next 7 ch, 2dc into last chain. Working other side of foundation chain, work 2 dc into same place as last dcs. 1 dc into next 7 dc, 3 dc into the same chain as 1st dc worked. Sl st into 1st dc. (22dc) 2nd round: 1ch, 1 dc into same stitch as chain, 1dc into next 8 dc, 2 dc into next 2 dc, 1 dc into next 9 dc, 2 dc into 2 dc. Sl st into 1st dc. (26dc) 3rd and 4th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. 5th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into next 7 dc, [dc2tog] 4 times, 1 dc into next 11 dc. Sl st into 1st dc. (22dc) 6th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into next 7 dc, [dc2tog] 2 times, 1 dc into next 11 dc. Sl st into 1st dc. (20dc) 7th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into next 8 dc, [dc2tog] 2 times, 1 dc into next 9 dc. Sl st into 1st dc. (18dc) 8th - 12th rounds: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Break off black and join in burgundy. 13th -20th rounds: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Fasten off and stuff legs.

Boot cuff
Using pink and 3mm hook, chain 20, sl st into 1st chain. 1st round: 1ch, 1 dc into same place, 1 dc into next 19 chain. Sl st into 1st dc。 2nd round. 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Fasten off. Thread the cuff over the leg and sew in place at the top of the boot. Attach legs to body so that Santa is in a sitting position.

Arms
With beige and 3 mm hook make 2 chain. 1st round: 6 dc into 2nd chain from hook. Join with a slip st into 1st dc. 2nd round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, [2 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (12 dc) 3rd round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. 4th round: 1 ch, 2 dc into same stitch as chain, 1 dc into next dc, [2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc] 5 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (18 dc) 5th and 6th rounds: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. 7th round: : 1 ch, [dc2tog, 1 dc into next 4 dc] 3 times. Sl st into 1st dc. (15 dc) 8th round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Break off beige and join in red. 9th - 20th rounds: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Fasten off. Stuff arms to approximately 1 - 2 cm (1/2 inch) below top.
Cuffs
Using pink and 3mm hook, chain 17, sl st into 1st chain. 1st round: 1ch, 1 dc into same place, 1 dc into next 16 chain. Sl st into 1st dc。 2nd round: 1 ch, 1 dc into each stitch to end, sl st into first dc. Fasten off. Thread the cuff over the arm and sew in place at wrist. Sew up the tops of the arms and attach to body.

Santa's stocking
Using yellow work rounds 1 - 12 of legs. Fasten off. Use a contrasting colour to embroider some details around the stocking.

Finally sew three colourful buttons to the front of the upper body. Wow! There he is finished.

Watch out! He has his list and he's checking it twice. I think I've been nice - well most of the time! Funky Santa ? Janet McMahon, 2009. www.yellowpinkandsparkly.blogspot.com
