GAUGE

Hat: In Stockinette stitch, 4 sts = 1" using larger ndl. Mittens: In Stockinette stitch, 4.5 sts = 1" using smaller ndl.

HAT

With MC and larger circular ndl, CO 80 sts. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist the stitches. PM on the first st. Rnd 1: \*k2, p2, rep from \* around. Rep round 1 until the hat measures 4" from the cast on edge. Knit 4 rounds. Join CC to begin colorwork. Rnds 1-5: Work chart. Rnds 6-8: Knit in MC. Rnds 9-13: Work chart. Rnds 14-16: Knit in MC. Rnds 17-21: Work chart. Continue to work in MC only until the hat measures 11" from the cast on edge

Decrease rounds:

Note: Change to dpns when necessary for number of sts on needle. Rnd 1: \*k6, k2, rep from \* around. [70 sts] Rnd 2: \*k5, k2tog, rep from \* around. [60 sts] Rnd 3: Knit. Rnd 4: \*k4, k2tog, rep from \* around. [50 sts] Rnd 5: \*k3, k2tog, rep from \* around. [40 sts] Rnd 6: Knit. Rnd 7: \*k2, k2tog, rep from \* around. [30 sts] Rnd 8: \*k1, k2tog, rep from \* around. [20 sts] Rnd 9: \*k2tog, rep from \* around. [10 sts] Cut yarn and draw end through rem sts Weave in ends. Block.

MITTENS Cuff

With MC, CO 32 sts placing 12 sts on needles 1 and 2, and 8 sts on needle 3. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist the stitches. PM on the first st. Rnd 1: \*k2, p2 rep from \* around. Rep round 1 until the mitten measures 3 " from the cast on edge. Knit every round until the cuff measures 5" from the cast on edge.

Thumb gusset

Rnd 1: Knit to last st, pm, knit last st. Rnd 2: Knit to 1st marker, m1, knit to the end, m1. Rnd 3: Knit. Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until there are 15 sts after the st marker on ndl. End with a round 2. Next rnd: knit to st marker on the ndl remove st marker, place the 15 gusset sts on a piece of scrap yarn, cast on one stitch using the backward loop method at the end of the round.

Hand

Knit 1 rnd. Join CC to begin colorwork. Rnds 1-5: Work chart. Rnds 6-8: Knit in MC. Rnds 9-13: Work chart. Rnds 14-15: Knit in MC.

Decrease

Decrease for the top of the mitten: Continue in MC only. Rnd 1: \*k6, k2tog, rep from \* around. [28 sts] Rnd 2: \*k5, k2tog, rep from \* around. [24 sts] Rnds 3 and 4: Knit. Rnd 5: \*k4, k2tog, rep from \* around. [20 sts] Rnd 6: \*k3, k2tog, rep from \* around. [16 sts] Rnd 7: Knit. Rnd 8: \*k2, k2tog, rep from \* around. [12 sts] Rnd 9: \*k1, k2tog, rep from \* around. [8 sts] Cut the yarn, leaving an 8" end. Draw end through rem sts twice, pulling tightly.

Thumb

Place the 15 held gusset sts on 3 dpns with 5 sts on each ndl. Place a st marker on the first stitch on needle 1. With MC, knit the 15 thumb sts and pick up 1 st into the backward loop cast on st on the hand. (16 sts) Knit 1 rnd. Next rnd: Ssk, knit to the last 2 stitches, k2tog. (14 sts remain) Knit every round until the thumb measures 214"
