Yarn- Worsted weight, about 1 oz (28 gm) (these two pairs of booties weigh 3/4 oz, so if you have a full oz of worsted you should be good to go) Needles- Set of 5 US 3 (3.25 mm) double pointed needles Gauge- I got 5 sts/in on bottom of purple bootie, and 5.25 sts/in on bottom of pink bootie, in stockinette. Gauge is not too critical, babies grow quickly...

Bottom (worked back and forth): Cast on 9 sts. Purl first (set up) row. (WS) Sl 1 with yarn in back, k 8 sts. Sl 1 with yarn in front, p 8 sts. Repeat these two rows until you have 10 chain selvedge sts on the right hand side of your work. Sl 1 with yarn in back, k 8 sts. (this is needle 1) root siues (workeu l le roulu): Pick up sts around all edges of stockinette rectangle as follows: 11 sts along left side edge (one st for every chain selvedge st) (needle 2) 9 sts along bottom (cast on) edge (needle 3) 11 sts along right side edge (one st for every chain selvedge st)(needle 4) (40 sts total) Now, working in the round, (purl one round, knit one round), repeating these two rounds twice more, then purl one round again. You should have 5 garter ridges. Top of foot (worked back and forth): Needle 1- k 8 sts, ssk last st needle 1 with first st needle 2. Turn. Needle 1- p 8 sts, p2tog last st needle 1 with first st needle 4. Repeat these two rows until you have 26 sts in all, ending with a purl row. Cuff (worked in the round): (K 1, p 1) for 8 rounds (Knit 1 round, purl one round) three times. Knit 1 round, the bind off next round, in purl. (you may want to use a size or two larger needle for this to prevent a tight edge)
