Polaris Poncho

Simple poncho made from a knit rectangle folded in half and seamed; this trick is in the perpendicular seam connection. This lightweight and cozy wrap can be styled any number of ways by spinning it around the body. And, it makes a cozy cowl! Finished measurements: S/M (L/XL) (shown in L/XL; model is a size 14) Knit rectangle: 44" wide x 16" high (50" x 16"). Materials: Berroco North Star, Harbour Seal 3006, 2 skeins; Snowy Owl 3005, 3 skeins US# 13 needle, 24" circular
Gauge:
3.25 sts/in and 5.25 rows/in over stockinette stitch with US13.
Knitting:
Using the darker grey, cast on 149 (173) sts. Rows 1 & 3: \*knit 5, purl 3\*, repeat \* to \*, end knit 5. Rows 2, 4, 6 & 8: knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you. Rows 5 & 7: purl 4, \*knit 5, purl 3\*, repeat \* to \*, end purl 4. Continue with this eight row repeat for 6", ending either on row 4 or 8. Change to the lighter grey and stockinette stitch (knit the right side, purl the wrong side). Continue for 1o" or enough yarn remains to bind off and sew seam. Bind off loosely.
Finishing:
Fold piece in half matching right selvedge edge to bound off edge (see photo). Sew mattress stitch seam the length of the selvedge edge. Tuck in ends.
