Shape toe end

Cast on 22 stitches on a waste yarn (provisionnal cast on). Using only 2 double pointed needles and main color, both strands held together, work as follows : 1st row : K21, turn. 2nd row : P20, turn (don't forget to start wraping the next stitch, see Techniques notes - Short Rows). 3rd row : K19, turn. 4th row : P18, turn. 5th row : K17, turn. Continue in this manner (knitting one st less each row) until you reach 5 middle stitches to knit. 18th row : P6, turn (continue to wrap the next stitch before turning). 19th row : K7, turn. 20th row : P8, turn. 21th row : K9, turn. 22th row : P10, turn. Continue in this manner (knitting one more st each row) until you've knit all stitches except the 1st st of waste yarn.

Shape foot

Carefully remove waste yarn and place all the 21 stitches of main color on another double pointed needlle. You should now have 42 stitches in all. Arrange the stitches evenly on 3 needles (14-14-14). Work now in rounds. Knit 20 of the 21 picked-up stitches from waste yarn, knit the next 22 stitches following the fake cable pattern. Continue to K20 and work the next 22 stitches in pattern until work measures 2" less than total foot length, from toe to heel, ending after 3rd row of pattern and ending last round after the 1st purl stitch of pattern (the one right after the 20 stitches of Stockinette)..

Shape heel

You will now work back and forth on 22 stitches : the 20 stitches of Stockinette (under foot) + both purl stitches at beginning and end of fake cable pattern. 1st row : P22, turn. 2nd row : K21, turn (don't forget to start wraping the next stitch, see Techniques notes - Short Rows). 3rd row : P20, turn. 4th row : K19, turn. Continue in this manner (knitting one st less each row) until you have only 5 middle stitches left to knit. 19th row : P6, turn (continue to wrap the next stitch before turning). 20th row : K7, turn. 21st row : P8, turn. 22nd row : K9, turn. 23rd row : P10, turn. Continue in this manner (knitting one more st each row) until you've knit all 22 stitches.

Ankle

Rearrange the 42 stitches evenly on 3 needles. Pick-up 1 stitch in the joint, slip 1 stitch back to left needle, P2tog (the picked-up stitch with the slipped back stitch), continue in fake cable pattern (1st row of pattern) to next joint, pick-up 1 stitch, P2tog (the picked-up stitch with next stitch), continue in pattern (1st row of pattern) to end of round. Continue in rounds following the fake cable pattern for another 2 1/2" (or desired length).
