MATERIALS:
Yarn: 100 gr/400 m sport weight sock yarn. I used 50 gr. Of 6 ply Sockenwolle from Nicole C. Mendez www.nicolecmendez.etsy.com Needles: US size 1 (2.75mm) double point needles and a tapestry Needle for weaving in ends. Gauge: 28-30 stitches over 4" /10 cm in stockinette stitch.
Cast on:
Cast on 44 stitches (11 sts per needle) in your favorite method. I prefer the long tail cast-on over two needles for flexible, firm yet stretchy cuff. Join in the round being careful not to twist the stitches. I join by switching one stitch from the left needle to the right and one stitch from the right needle to the left so essentially the stitches are crossing over each other on the opposite needle. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. Work K3, P1 rib for 26 rounds.
Thumb Gusset:
Round 27: K3, p1, k1, PM, M1R, k1, M1L, PM, K1, Knit in pattern to the end of the round. Round 28 and 29: Knit in rib pattern, knitting all gusset stitches between the markers in stockinette. Round 30: K3, p1, k1, SM, M1R, k3, M1L, SM, K1, Knit in pattern to the end of the round. Round 31 and 32: Knit in rib pattern. Round 33: K3, p1, k1, SM, M1R, k5, M1L, SM, K1, Knit in pattern to the end of the round. Repeat the last 3 rounds increasing the thumb stitches between the markers by 2 sts each time until there are 15 stitches between the markers. Knit 2 rounds in rib pattern. K3, p1, k1, place 15 sts on waste yarn. M1 using the backward loop method and join to knit in the round. Knit 41 rounds in rib pattern. Bind off in rib pattern.
Thumb:
Place 15 sts from waste yarn to 3 needles. Pick up 4 stitches from mitt body. Knit one round. K14, k2tog, k3. (18 sts) K 3 rounds. Work K1, p1 rib for 8 rounds. Bind off in rib pattern. To finish, cut yarn, draw through the final sts and tighten. Weave in ends. Repeat directions for the second mitt.
