Description: Pattern for a quick, easy hat for baby that features a big fluffy pom-pom "snowball" on top. It has integrated earflaps (no picking up of stitches!), and the soft tassels double as ties to keep the hat snuggled onto baby's head or to keep busy hand occupied! While any Bulky (#5) yarn meeting gauge can be used for the body of the hat, the pattern is written for a soft, nubby looking yarn like Chunky Sprinkles by Deborah Norville and the pom-pom is made from BernatPipsqueak.
Please: Read all instructions before you begin! SiZes: 3 to 6 months, 6-9 months
Materials:
· Both sizes: One skein of Deborah Norville Serenity Chunky Sprinkles (71 yds/65 meters) yarn for the main color (MC) · Both sizes: Approximately 25-30 Yds (23 - 27 m) Bernat Pipsqueak yarn for pom-pom and ties (CC). Both sizes: Small amount (1 yd) of white worsted yarn for creating/tying on the pompom Needles: Circular (16" length) and double-pointed, US size #10. · Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

· 12sts = 4 inches using US #10 needle (6 mm) with Serenity Chunky Sprinkles yarn

Instructions
Earflaps
The two earflaps are worked back and forth first, then they are integrated into the bottom edge of the hat (no picking up stiches - yea!). For each earflap: With double-pointed needle or using circular needle as a straight needle, CO 4 sts. using MC yarn. Row 1 and all odd rows: Knit across. · Row 2: K1, kfb, kfb, k1 (6 sts) · Row 4: K1, kfb, k2, kfb, k1 (8 sts) · Rows 5-8: Work in garter stich Fiest earflap: After completing Row 8, put the 8 stitches on a stitch holder. Tie off and cut the yarn, leaving a 6" tail to be woven in later. Second earflap: Using the circular needle and working back and forth, repeat the above instructions to create the second earflap, but don't cut the yarn after completing Row 8. Instead: Knit a gth Row (second earflap only) Leave the stitches from the second ear flap on your needle.
Hat Body
the 8 stiches from the second earflap already on your circular needle · Use the backward loop method to CO 15 (17) stiches for the front of the hat ·Knit the 8 stitches of the first earflap from the holder · Use the backward loop method to CO 11 (13) stiches for the back of the hat ·Total stiches: 42 (46) Begin working the hat using Stockinette stitch in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. · Place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round Knit all rounds until hat measures 4" (5") from cast on front or back edge.
Hat Crown
To create the crown of the hat, transfer your stitches to double-pointed needles and decrease as follows:
Size 6-9 months only.
· Decrease 4 stitches evenly across round so that you have a total of 42 stiches.
Both sizes:
\*K5, K2TOG. Repeat from \* to the end of the round (36 stiches) \*K4, K2TOG. Repeat from \* to the end of the round (30 stiches) \*K3, K2TOG. Repeat from \* to the end of the round (24 stiches) ? \*K2, K2TOG. Repeat from \* to the end of the round (18 stiches) \*K2TOG. Repeat from \* to the end of the round (12 stiches) \*K2TOG. Repeat from \* to the end of the round (6 stiches) Cut the yarn, leaving a 15" tail. Use a darning needle to weave the yarn through the 6 remaining live stitches TwICE. Secure and weave in the end.
Pom-Pom
The pom-pom shown was created using Bernat Pipsqueak yarn. Use a pom-pom maker to make a large pom-pom or create one as I did: ? Cut a 5" x 3" piece of stiff cardboard. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard 50 times. Carefully remove the yarn from the cardboard. Using a heavy, sturdy worsted yarn of the same color (not Pipsquek - it's not strong enough!), wrap around the center 3-4 times tightly. Knot the center wrap securely, leaving two 8" lengths. (You'll have a figure-eight shape, tied in the middle.) Cut the free Pipsqueak loops on either side. Fluff into a ball and trim to size. (This is a bit messy when you cut it!) ·Securely tie the pom-pom onto the crown of the hat. Ties Safety note: If you add ties, be sure to make the ties SHORT enough so that they are not a choking hazard...AND don't leave the baby unsupervised while wearing! The ties shown were created using Bernat Pipsqueak yarn. Although they are braided, they "melt" together to create a soft, continuous looking tie when hand-washed. For each tie: · Cut SIX 30" lengths of yarn (or about 2.5 times the length of the finished tie yol want). Use a crochet hook or tapestry needle, pull the lengths through the bottom center of the earflap, leaving half of the lengths on each side of the flap. You'll have 12 strands, 6 strands on each side of the earflap. Divide the 12 strands into three groups of 4 strands each: 2 from each side of the earflap. ·Braid the three groups together tightly until desired length. Tie a firm knot and trim the ends to about 1/2" .
