Finnsheep Striped Hat
by Emma Karvonen

This rustic and relaxed hat is designed to be used carelessly. Its floppy shape can hide your hair when they are not having one of their proudest days! This hat is a part of the accessories collection I designed as my thesis for my Bachelor of Design degree in Kuopio Academy of Design. The original name of the collection is “Passinpokkimat", which translates roughly "bumped by a ram". All the pieces in the collection are made using Finnsheep wool provided by Pirtin kehraamo, the largest still working spinning mill in Finland.
Size:
Head circumference 57-59 cm.
Yarn:
Pirtin Kehraäm? combed wool yarn (100 % Finnsheep wool, 100 g / 220 m) or any other rustic wool yarn of same weight. 50 grams (110 m) of main color (natural grey) and 50 grams (110 m) of contrasting color (natural white). Needles: 4 mm & 4,5 mm DPNs or circular needle.
Gauge:
20 sts and 28 rounds in stockinette stitch with larger needles = 10 cm (4 inches)
Abbreviations:
MC / CC = main color / contrasting color rs / ws = right side / wrong side k = knit w&t = wrap and turn k2tog = knit 2 sts together

Directions:
With smaller needles and CC, cast on 92 sts. Join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round.
Brim:
Purl one round, knit one round, purl one more round. Begin the shaping: Round 1 (rs): k65, w&t. Round 2 (ws): k38, w&t. Round 3: knit to the wrapped stitch, pick up the wrap and knit it together with the stitch it was wrapped around, k3, w&t. Repeat the round 3 back and forth until there are 6 sts left on both sides of the marker. Knit the rs round to the end (= to the marker). Purl one round, knit one round and purl one more round.
Hat:
Switch to the larger needles and join in the MC, knit 5 rounds (do not cut CC!). Begin the stripe pattern: Round 1: knit with CC. Rounds 2 - 5: knit with MC. Repeat the stripe pattern total of 7 times. Knit one more round with CC and two rounds with MC.
Crown shaping:
1. Decrease round (MC): \*k2tog, k2\* Repeat \* - \* until the end of the round. (= 69 Ssts) Knit one round with MC, one round with CC and two rounds with MC. 2. Decrease round (MC): \*k2tog, k2\* Repeat \* - \* until there is 1 st left, k1. (= 52 sts) Knit one round with MC, one round with CC and one round with MC. 3. Decrease round (MC): \*k2tog, k1\* Repeat \* - \* until there is 1 st left, k1. (= 35 Sts) Knit two rounds with MC. 4. Decrease round (CC): \*k2tog\* Repeat \* - \* until there is 1 st left, k1. ( = 18 sts). Cut the CC. Knit one round with MC. 5. Decrease round (MC): \*knit 2 together\* Repeat \*-\* until the end of the round. ( =9 sts).
Finishing:
Cut the MC leaving a 20 cm tail. Using a tapestry needle, pull yarn through the remaining stitches twice and tighten, weave in the yarn end. Weave in other yarn ends. Soak and block the hat if necessary.
