Ruutupipo = Regtangle hat
The colours of forest were the inspiration for this hat. I had some beautiful plant-dyed yarns by Rihivilla that I wanted to use for colourwork. I used a pattern similar to Rihivilla's own mitten designs. The rim of the hat is knitted sideways and the stitches for the colourwork section are picked from the side. The hat is slighly elongated instead of tightly fitting. You can also fold the rim for extra warmth for your ears.
Yarn:
Rihivilla Finnsheep wool (100 % wool, 100 g /210 m) or yarn with similar yardage such as Cascade 220, Garnstudio Drops Karisma or Novita 7 veljesta. Main colour (dark brown), 50 g. Contrast colours (red and orange): 20 g.
Gauge:
18,5 stitches and 28 rows of colourwork = 10 cm Needles and other supplies: Circular or double-pointed needles, 3,5 mm or as needed to achieve the gauge. Tapestry needle to weave in ends.
Size:
S-M-L, circumference 52-55-58 cm, height 23-24-25 cm.
Techniques and abbreviations:
Three-needle bind-off. Adding stitches by knitting front and back. K: knit, kfp: knit front and back, k2tog: knit two together
Pattern:
Cast on 12-13-14 s with main colour. Knit 154-162-170 rows (77-81-85 purl ridges) of garter stitch. Pick up 12 s from the cast-on edge, and connect the ends with the three-needle bind-off making sure not to twist the work and leaving the last stitch live on the needle. Notice that the cast-off edge now defines the wrong side of the work. Turn the work right side out and pick stitches from the garter ridges along the edge of the rim. Pick 77-81-85 s. Now you should have 78-82-85 s on the needle, including the left-over stitch from the bind-off. Use the main colour for the increase row: Size S: \*k3, kfb, k4, kfb, k3, kfb\*, repeat \*-\* five more times. 96 s on the needle. Size M: k4, kfb, \*k3, kfb\*, repeat \*-\* eight more times. Repeat from start. 102 s on the needle. Size L: k2, kfb, \*k3, kfb\*, repeat \*.\* nine more times. Repeat once from start. 108 s on the needle.
Colourwork:
Follow the chart for 32 rows. Repeat the chart 16-17-18 times on each row. Knit two rows with the main colour.
Decrease rows:
Size M only: k12, \*k11, k2tog\*, repeat \*.\* two more times. Repeat from start. 96 s on the needle. Knit one row. Size L only: \*k25, k2tog\*, repeat \*-\* seven more times. 104 s on the needle. Knit one row. Row 1: \*k10-k10-k11, k2tog\*, repeat seven more times. 88-88-96 s on the needle. Row 2: Knit all. Row 3: \*k9-k9-k10, k2tog\*, repeat seven more times. 80- 80-88 s on the needle. Row 4: Knit all.

Continue the decreases on every other row until 8 s remain. Thread the yarn though the remaining stitches and tighten.
Finishing:
Weave in ends, wet the hat and stretch especially the colourwork section to smooth it. Squeeze most of the water into a towel and leave to dry horizontally. Main colour (brown) Contrast colour 1 (red)
