To read the story the pattern is based on, go to http://fiberfiction.com/stories.html and click on Athena's Victory. This cowl has long floats if you choose to knit it stranded. You can also knit the cowl flat using intarsia and stockinette stitch, and then seam up the back of it. I chose to knit the original using a stranded technique in the round to provide more warmth to the wearer since I knew she gets very cold in the Winter. For great video tutorials on how to knit stranded or intarsia, see http://knittinghelp.com

Materials:

Skacel yarns Adagio (70% baby llama, 30% silk, 110 yards, 50 gram balls): 2 balls royal purple, 1 ball gold. US Size 4 (3.5mm)16 inch circular needle 3 stitch markers (2 in one color, one in a contrasting color) Gauge: 22 stitches by 38 rows in stockinette stitch equals 4 inches (10 cm) square Note: If you need a cowl that can fit over a head larger than 22 inches, you will need to add more stitches. It is very easy to just add stitches in between the repeats for this. For each inch of width needed, add 5-6 stitches to the cowl. This cowl is designed to be snug going over your head so that it will stand up easier while around your neck. If it flops in a way you don't like, I suggest either making a wider hem (add more stockinette rounds before the purl ridge on the bottom and after the purl ridge near the top), or using a decorative broach to pin it tighter around the top.

Directions:

Cast on 99 stitches loosely. Place marker to indicate beginning of round and join, being careful not to twist. Rounds 1-6: Knit all stitches Round 7: Purl all stitches Rounds 8-13: Knit all stitches Begin Winged Victory Chart, using stitch markers to mark the ends of the 3 repeats:

Begin end rounds: Rounds 1-6: Knit all stitches Round 7: Purl all stitches Rounds 8-13: Knit all stitches. Bind off loosely Finishing: Fold the bottom of the cowl at the purl ridge and sew down the bottom edge to the inside of the cowl. This creates a folded hem and adds some structure to the cowl. Repeat the same for the top edge. Weave in ends and wear it when you're ready to stand strong.
