Materials needed size 3 double pointed needles, scraps of fingering /sock yarn about /4 OZ and 30 yards per square, small crochet hook with a fairly narrow center, tapestry needle to weave in ends. Plus about 4o0 yards for the lace and I- cord edge. S= slip stitch sts= stitches sm= slip marker yo= yarnover K = knit k2tog = k2tog p2tog= purl 2 together BO= bind off P= purl Mitered squares make up this simple shawl and uses leftover sock and fingering yarn. It is finished on the bottom edge with knitted lace and on the top edge with an applied I cord. Mitered square: Cast on 48 stitches using the long tail method, placing a marker after 24 stitches. Row 1. S 1, knit to the end. Row 2. S 1 k to 2 sts before the marker ssk, sm , k2tog, k to the end Row 3. S 1 k to the end Row 4. S 1, k to 2 sts before the marker, ssk, sm, k2tog, k to the end Continue in this manner till there are 4 stitches left bind off and weave in yarn ends. The slipped stitches on the edges will facilitate picking up stitches to join the squares together. Starting at the bottom finish square one then cast on 24 stitches using the long tail method place marker And then pick up 24 stitches on square 1 and continue with the pattern as above for the square. I used 8 squares on the side , 4 rows deep plus the triangles and the shawl is approximately 6 foot x 30 inches. The inside squares you pick up 24 stitches on each of the adjoining squares. Stitches should be picked up on the same side each time to make a neat seam, you will have a right side and a wrong side. I used a crochet hook for this task and then transferred the stitches to the knitting needle. The size, can of course be altered to meet your needs. Triangles are started the same as the square casting on 24 with the long tail for the first triangle and picking up 24 stitches from the adjoining square. Row 1. S1, knit across Row 2. S 1, SSK, knit to 2 stitches before the marker k2tog, sm, ssk, k to 2 sts before the end and k2tog Continue these 2 rows till there are 8 stitches left. S 1, ssk, ssk, ssk, k1, turn Bind off and weave in ends. The next triangles pick up stitches from the adjacent squares. The end triangle cast on 24 sts using the long tail method and pick up 24 sts from the adjoining square. They all get worked the same. Lace edging: cast on 5 stitches using the backward loop or wimpy cast on, turn and knit 4 and knit the last stitch together with the stitch at the top corner of the shawl, turn, (knitting the two stitches together every other row is what attaches the lace to the shawl) Row 1 - yo, p 2tog, k1, yo, k2 Row 2 - k2, k,p,k into the next stitch, k1, yo, p3tog ( \*the third stitch is the next bound stitch at the bottom edge of the shawl, you will do this every other row to attach the lace edging) Row 3 - y0, p2tog, k6 Row 4 - k6, y0, p3tog\* Row 5 - yo, p2tog, k6 Row 6 - BO3, k2, yo, P3tog Repeat rows as needed and bind off.
Applied I cord
Now to finish the top edge of the shawl; cast on 5 sts, k 5 slide to the other end of the needle And bring the working yarn around to the first stitch on the needl Knit 4 stitches slip one stitch as if to knit using the left needle from the top bound edge of the shawl, slip it to the right needle and knit it together with the fifth stitch slip to the other end of the needle and repeat till the edge is bound, bind off and weave in ends.
