Triathlon Mug Cozy
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
To work this pattern you need to know how to work in the round, Sc, Reverse Sc, and how to crochet by graph.
Materials:
2 contrasting colors DK #3 weight yarn G6/4.0 mm hook Stitch markers Button
Stitch Guide:
Sc: single crochet St/Sts: stitch/stitches BLO: crochet in the back loop only Inside corner: Reverse sc3tog the last stitch before corner, corner stitch, and first stitch in next section
PartI - Base:
We begin by working in the round to make the base then working back and forth in rows to make the sides. The base is made using continuous rounds - do not join at the end of each round. It is helpful to use stitch markers in the first stitch of each round. Round 1: Make an adjustable ring and crochet 6 sc in ring. (6) Round 2: 2 Sc in each st around. (12) Round 3: \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next st\* around. (18) Round 4: \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next 2 sts\* around. (24) Round 5: \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next 3 sts\* around. (30) Round 6: \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next 4 sts\* around. (36) Round 7: \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next 5 sts\* around. (42) Round 8: Work BLO. \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next 6 sts\* around. (48) Round 9: Work BLO. \*2 Sc in next st, Sc in next 7 sts\* around. (54) At this point, we've reached a good spot to test our gauge with the base of a mug. I sized this pattern using what I consider a standard mug with a 3 1" diameter base, and after Round 9, your circle should be right at the size of the mug base. However, I designed Rounds 8-11 in BLO in order to hug the corner of the mug base, so this also allows a little wiggle room for slightly different sized mugs. You can also adjust the size of the base to fit the size of your mug. Keep in mind, however, that the graph portion needs a minimum width of 40 sts, so if you reduce the size of the base you need to make sure you keep it to at least 40 sts plus 5-10 more sts to allow for a gap around the mug handle.

Part Il - Sides:
Now we'll start turning the corner up from the base and begin the sides of the mug cozy.. Round 10: Work BLO. Sc in each st around. (54) Round 11: Work BLO. Sc in each st around. Do not turn. (54) Here we begin to work the graph back and forth in rows creating a gap for the mug handle. Stitch count does not include the Chain 1 at the end of the row. Rows 12-25: Work graph. Begin with Sc in next 44 sts, chain 1, turn. (44) Continue from graph through Row 25, Chain, 1 turn so right side is facing you and then continue to Part ll.
Part Ill - Finish:
Phew! You're done with the graph- that wasn't so hard was it? Check the height of your cozy and size it up to your mug. I like to leave about 1" of lip room on the mug. If yours is too short, now is the time to add more rows until you reach your desired height. But remember, unless you plan to improvise the finishing edge, you'll have to add two rows in order to get back to this point, so keep that in mind when deciding whether to add more rows. Let's continue by working the finishing edge. Stitch count is not critical here; just keep your stitches even for a nice finish... 26: a.) Reverse Sc evenly down right side of graphed rows to second to last stitch, work Inside corner (see stitch guide). b.) Reverse Sc across to second to last stitch, work Inside corner. c.) Reverse Sc evenly up left side of graphed rows, 3 Reverse Sc in first stitch of Row25. d.) Reverse Sc in next 42 sts across. e.) In last stitch, [Reverse Sc, Slip st, Chain 25 (or enough to reach over the mug handle to where you intend to place the button)], slip st back into same corner st, Slip st in next st. Fasten off. Weave in ends, sew on button, and you're done! I hope you enjoy your mug cozy! Copyright Notice: This pattern is free and you may share it!
