UPHILL DOWNHILL SHAWL

Materials:
5 balls of Cascade 220 or l1o0 yards of other worsted weight wool yarn. (any weight yarn will work just vary hook size) Yardage will vary depending on your measurements. Mine was 6o inches wide before blocking. Size K crochet hook Blocking tools
Pattern Notes:
Gauge is relative, the foundation row establishes size. I recommend working a gauge swatch to get a feel for the pattern and decide what hook you want to use. To make a gauge swatch work the foundation row for 1o inches then work the repeat row. When selecting your hook size remember, you will be blocking the shawl to open stitches so don't work it too loose. Wet block your swatch or at least stretch it with your fingers to see what it will look like. This shawl uses a foundation row that alternates between FSC and FDC, start with a FSC and end with a FDC, if you already know how to work this skip steps 1-3. Alternating Foundation Row as follows: Step 1: Start with a slip knot on the hook, CH 2, insert hook in second CH from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop (foundation chain made), yarn over, draw through the 2 loops on hook (single crochet made). Step 2: Yarn over, insert needle into 2 loops of “foundation chain", yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop (foundation chain made), yarn over draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, draw through last 2 loops on hook (double crochet made) foundation double crochet completed. Step 3: Insert hook into 2 loops of “foundation chain", yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop (foundation chain made), yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook (single crochet made)foundation single crochet completed. If you need more help with these directions there are tutorials with pictures available online. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until row measures from finger-tip to finger-tip un-stretched. End with a FDC Repeat Row: CH 2 tightly, skip first DC and first SC, SC in second DC, [DC in SC, SC in DC] across row end with DC in last SC. Turn. (two stitches decreased) This shawl consists of a one row repeat. Continue to work the Repeat Row until only 4 stitches remain at the tip of the shawl. Final Row: CH 2 tightly, skip first DC and first SC, SC in second DC, DC in SC, SC in same SC. End off.
Ruffle
Choose a right side (whichever one looks better to you) hold shawl with long foundation row on top and the right side facing you. Attach yarn to the left hand tip. Round 1: SC around two sides of the shawl by placing 2 SC in the sides of the DCs and in each CH2 space. When you reach the bottom of the shawl, place 4 SCs in each of the 2 "turning" stitches on the bottom tip. Continue up the remaining side. Stop when you reach the foundation row. Round 2: CH 3, 4 DC in each foundation CH across top of shawl, 3 DC in each of the SC around the remaining edges of the shawl. Attach with slip stitch to 3"d CH of CH 3. End Of. Weave in ends. Wet block to open stitches and increase shawl to desired size.
