CROSSROADS
design by Amy E. Anderson I was playing around one day, inventing stitches, when I hit upon this one; I liked it because it was very easy to knit and had an interesting texture. When l decided to make an "outdoorsy" vest, I immediately thought of this stitch, and chose to use small needles so that the fabric would have a lot of body and warmth for our Wisconsin springs and autumns ...although I've worked in some offices that were so chilly I would have loved a vest like this! Crossroads is a unisex design, so I've tried to offer a wide range of sizes. The cut of the body is very straight - if you want the waist to snug in, work on size 3 needles for the first 2-3". Directions are given for 5 sizes. If only one number appears, it applies to all sizes. Materials: Cascade 220 (DK-weight wool) 4 (5, 5, 6, 7) skeins Needles: Size 4 or size needed to obtain gauge. Size 3, 16" circular for edgings. Gauge: 6 sts ${\bf\delta}={\bf\delta}^{1}{}^{,}$ in cube stitch on larger needles Buttons: 7 buttons, size %" Finished Dimensions: Chest at armholes: $38^{\ast}(42^{\ast},\,46^{\ast},\,50^{\ast},\,54^{\ast})$ Body Length: $20^{*}(21^{*},22^{*},23^{*},24^{*})$ Armhole Depth: $8\%^{\ast}(9^{\ast},\,9\%^{\ast},\,70^{\ast},\,10\%^{\ast})$ Cube Stitch (multiple of $\mathsf{6+1}$ Row 1 (RS): $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , $\mathsf{P5^{\star}}$ rep \*\* ending K1 Row 2 (WS): Purl Row 3: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , P1\* rep \*\* ending K1 Row 4: Puri Row 5: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , $\mathsf{P1}^{\star}$ rep \*\* ending K1 Row 6: Purl Repeat Rows 1-6 for pattern. Work in Cube Stitch until Right Front measures $1\,1\,{|}_{2}^{}{}^{*}$ (12", $12\%^{*}$ ,13", $13^{1}/2^{"})$ I ending so that next row worked will have WS facing. Begin armhole shaping as follows: Next row (WS): BO 6 (6, 6, 8, 8) sts at beginning of row, work to end in pattern. BO 2 sts at beginning of WS rows, 3 (3,3,4,4) times. BO 1 st at beginning of WS rows 6 (6, 6, 8 ,8) times. You wil have 37 (43, 49, 49, 55) sts remaining. Work even until Right Front measures 17" (i8", 19", 20", 21") ending so next row worked will have RS facing. Begin neck shaping as follows: Next row (RS): BO 11 (13, 14, 15, 18) sts at beginning of row, work to end in pattern. BO 2 sts at beginning of RS rows 2 times. BO 1 st at beginning of RS rows 5 times. You wil have 17 (21, 26, 25, 28) sts remaining. Work even until Right Front measures 20" (21", 22", 23", 24") ending so next row worked wil have WS facing. Slip all sts to holder for Right Shoulder.
Knit together and bind off shoulder seams on WS, as follows:
Slip one set of front shoulder sts onto one needle. Slip one set of the back shoulder sts onto another needle. Hold these two needles so that the RS are together and you're looking at the WS.Using a $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ needle, knit together and bind off as follows: Insert needle through 1 st on the front needle and 1 st on the back needle, and knit these 2 sts together. Repeat for the next st on the front and back needle, then lift the first st on the right needleover the $2^{\ n d}$ st to bind off, as you would in ordinary knitting. Continue working in this manner to the end of the row. Note: On the collar and armhole edgings it will seem like you're picking up very few stitches - this is intentional - it will help them to snug in and lie nice and flat.
Collar:
With size 3 circular needle and RS facing, PU 24 (25, 26, 27, 30) sts along Right Neck Edge, knit the 45 (49, 51, 53, 59) sts from Back Neck Holder, PU 24 (25, 26, 27, 30) sts along Left Neck Edge. You will have 93 (99, 103, 107, 119) sts total. (WS): Knit 1 row. Purl 2rows Knit 2 rows Purl 2 rows Knit 2 rows Next row (RS): Purl across, binding off all sts.
Armhole Edgings: (sew sides seams first)
With size 3 circular needle and RS facing, begin at armpit and PU 42 (44, 46, 49, 52) sts from armpit to shoulder seam, then PU 42 (44, 46, 49, 52) sts trom snouider seam to armp You will have 84 (88, 92, 98, 104) sts total. Join and purl 3 rounds. Next rd: Purl around, binding offall sts. The armhole edgings will curl to the inside, you can baste the bound-off edge to the inside if you like.
Button Plackets:
Note: If you are making the vest for a man, the buttonholes go on the Left Front. If you are making the vest for a woman, the buttonholes go on the Right Front. Note: When I say “bind off the next 2 sts", this means that you will work 2 more sts before lifting 1 over to bind off. After binding off for a buttonhole, there will be 1 st on the right-hand needle - this st counts toward the next group. For example, if the pattern says [BO 2, Work 12] this stitch is the first of the 12.
Placket with Buttonholes:
With size 3 needle and RS facing, PU 82 (85, 91, 97, 103) sts Make buttonholes as follows: Next row (RS): Work 4 (3, 3, 3, 3) sts in pattern, [BO 2, Work 10 (11, 12, 13, 14) sts in pattern] rep [ -- ] 5 more times, work 3 (2, 2, 2, 2) in pattern. Next row: Work in seed stitch, casting on 2 sts over each buttonhole to replace the sts that were bound off on the previousrow. Work 2 more rows in seed stitch. Next row: BO all sts.
Plain Button Placket:
With smaller needle and RS facing, PU 82 (85, 91, 97, 103) sts along front edge. Work 7 rows in seed stitch. Next row: BO all sts.
Finishing:
Block vest by laying it between 2 damp towels, overnight. Sew side seams.' Sew buttons on.
