ISFIT2015 Mittens Knitting Pattern: Detailed Instructions for Medium to Large Women's Hands

You will need

Dale Garn Freestyle (100% wool, 80m/50g), 1 ball each of 0017 (white) and 5626 (blue) or other wool yarn of comparable weight 1 set 4 mm DPNs (or size to get gauge) 1 stitch marker Scrap yarn Embroidery needle

Gauge

21sts/10cm in stockinette Note: This pattern fits a medium to large woman's hand. If your hands are particularly small, go down a needle size; if they're particularly large, go up.

Hand

Using long-tail cast-on, CO 32 sts in blue. Join into round, being careful not to twist. \*P1 round Using white, k 1 round, p 1 round. K 1 round in blue. Repeat from \* until you have 18 garter stitch 'ribs', ending on a white purl round. Next round: Begin color chart, increasing as shown. Place a marker between the palm and thumb gusset. Work row 2-16 of color chart. Row 17: Place thumb stitches on scrap yarn. CO 3 sts to close the gap, then continue working rows 17-43. Break yarn, and thread through the remaining six stitches. Pull tight.

Thumb

Transfer thumb stitches from the scrap yarn to two DPNs. With blue, start at the right corner and k9, then pick up 5 sts along the gap (14 sts). Next round: k8, k2tog, k3, ssk the last st of this row with the frst stitch of the next (12 sts). K a total of 15 rounds. Row 16: ssk, k2 around Row 17: ssk, k1 around Row 18: ssk around Break yarn, thread through the remaining 3 sts.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Soak in warm water for 5-10 minutes. Gently squeeze out water against the edge of the sink, then roll into a towel and press down to dry even more. Do not wring or twist. Lay on a flat surface and gently pull into shape. Dry laying flat.
