WendyMcD Color Changing Workshop Day Chat Archieves working off of Class Hand Out. September 1, 2012 3:06 PM Ok so today's hand out has some of my techniques in it I didn't go through everything as I didn't know how deep ya'll would want to go and this is good for skimming the surface at least.

WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:07 PM ge 2 of the class handout WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:08 PM

This shows a really GREAT meld and GREAT color choices so I started out with it. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:08 PM Think of yarn like paint WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:09 PM

you want to use your palette and mix your paints to change into new colors nwspecial has joined the chat

WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:09 PM The first and basic method of doing this is on in that turquoise. Can you see the yarn change through those colors via the numbers? WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:10 PM That's all you need for some yarns. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:10 PM

I like the change on page 2 but I'm not so sure about the one on the left on page 3. The lilac seems too light for the rest of the colors?

WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:11 PM Notice that the middle color doesn't even have turquoise in it! Well ok perhaps there's a blip of color. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:12 PM HAHA you are getting ahead of me which is good as I'm a Yertle when it comes to teaching. randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:12 PM I like the darker set on the right of page 3 WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:12 PM

Choices! That's what makes this work best. So lets go on to page 3 then. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:12 PM

It do you think about top left? randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:13 PM ems like the transitions aren't as fluid WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:13 PM

It was what I did right after the turquoise and you can see the turquoise at the top... you can see it in the gray color. So WHY exactly doesn't this one work?

GinniG September 1, 2012 3:13 PM Well, you already know what I think. The lilac seems too light so the dark purple row stands out too much, IMHO WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:13 PM GG are you on the left photo WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:14 PM turq WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:14 PM grey_dark turq WendyMcD September 1,2012 3:14 PM purple is that the lilac GinniG September 1, 2012 3:14 PM Yes, but I might not be describing to colors correctly. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:14 PM GinniG September 1, 2012 3:15 PM

Hang on, I'm going to check the pdf to see if I'm getting the same colors melthebiker has left marykross September 1, 2012 3:16 PM September 1, 2012 3:16 PM

OK, my printer changed some of the colors, so ignore my color names. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:16 PM

Ok, so you are correct, I threw this color in to show you how bad choices work. You might have pulled the middle color out of your stash cause after all it DOES have turq in it - which you are moving out of but it's not working due to the fact that the gray is LIGHT if the gray were darker would it work? Cendrillon September 1, 2012 3:16 PM n my photo on the left the purple stands out too much in the middle of the light also randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:16 PM I think if the gray was darker it would blend better with the other colors WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:16 PM

exactly! WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:17 PM If the gray were dark gray it MIGHT work but still you are going from grey to purple so it's a tough call and it might need more work.

GinniG September 1, 2012 3:17 PM Also, there's a dark stripe (not naming colors) above the light that looks like a bar. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:17 PM

actly, which is what we don't want. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:17 PM How about the photo on the right the purple through to pink? melthebiker has left

randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:18 PM e likes that one better jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:18 PM it's almost like there's too much grey for the transitions WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:18 PM

was JUST going to SAY that it's pleasing to the eye jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:18 PM like the right one better jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:18 PM yes I like the right one better as well September 1, 2012 3:18 PM good so we are on the same page GinniG September 1, 2012 3:18 PM

Although it stil goes from a darker color at the top through a lighter color in the middle, it seems to work a lotbetter

Cendrillon I like that one much better JAGsHunny has joined the chat GinniG September 1, 2012 3:19 PM

2 because the colors are all purple(?) at the top? WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:19 PM The colors were solid purple to purple with pink to a pink mauve color which has just enough purple in it to make this work, I was actually surprised as I tossed that pink in thinking that it might not work.

WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:19 PM There are just the three skeins but the meld tricks the mind into thinking it's all one. randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:20 PM the silver doesn't seem to be a problem either WendyMcD September 1,2012 3:20 PM right! WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:20 PM t WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:20 PM

5o lets move on to page 4 to what happened next to the pinks WendyMcD September 1,2012 3:20 PM Photo on the left? randyjen4 September 1,2012 3:20PM The right one is too bottom heavy with all the purple randyjen4 September1,2012 3:20PM

orry jumped ahead WendyMcD September1,2012 3:21 PM JoprobBob WendyMcD September 1,2012 3:21 PM You are correct the left is fine and so you skipped it, the right is the problem child randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:21 PM I like the left one thoug JAGsHunny has left

jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:22 PM great it's raining I may lose connection if it gets too heavy WendyMcD September 1,20123:23PM

ah I was wondering if peeps were having trouble or just getting the info GinniG September 1, 2012 3:23 PM

But the right one might work if you were looking to go from light to dark as a gradient color maybe? Cendrillon September 1, 2012 3:23 PM The change on the right is too sudden and severe nwspecialhasleft nwspecial has left WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:23 PM

Ok so the one on the right was the problem child and if you go to my blog you will see what happened after I published that today. http://wmdramble.blogspot.com/

There was a bit more work needed to get from the pink to the purple and I tried it again this morning. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:24 PM How to get from the pink/purple to the dark purple N=New color O=Old color k1 N, k1 O across 2 rows 0 k1 O, k1 N across 1 row O 1 row N 2 rows 0 2 rows N 1 row O drop old WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:24 PM Did everybody get to see it? marykross has left

randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:25 PM res I did. Have my ipad and computer both going! WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:25 PM Still not liking what I did so the next step to take to totally make that puppy SUBMIT! Is on the next page SIX of the handout.

jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:25 PM ;alotbetteronthewebsite WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:28 PM

You would have to work in texture to make that one work but it can work and I could whip it into shape but another day. The entire headband is on page 5 with pithy directions on how to make it. As you can see on my blog mines still a work in progress as I would like to meld back into the turq and add faux buttons and then gift it to DD as she's a total Deva and could rock this thing. Notice that you have 2 color choices, you can wear it turq up or purp up. HAHA turq and purp marykross has left

September 1, 2012 3:28 PM

WendyMcD That one on the blog.. it goes from the solid purple back to the purple pink, through to another pink that has blue and greens and then into a blue with green and no pink.. but did you see how well those colors flowed? You'd never know it was FouR skeins of yarn! These from the leftover sock stash too. I'm just stash diving but then I have a massive stash to dive into. marykross has joined the chat

WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:29 PM Any questions so far about how to meld or transition from one skein to the next using just the 1, 2, 2, 1 method?

Cendrillon September 1, 2012 3:30 PM

ikes sense! randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:30 PM I'm getting it too jabberpaws September 1,2012 3:30 PM

does make sense GinniG September 1, 2012 3:30 PM How well would this work with lace knitting- all those yo and decreases? WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:31 PM WELL IF done right, I only showed you how to do it wrong so far! LOL you know me! GinniG September 1, 2012 3:32 PM )onward! WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:33 PM

Page 6 has the photo of my Sands which I wanted done so that I could photo it and get the pattern out. Bad call.. I had spun some dark purple from the TDF, 2 ply lovely and it would have worked better, why didn't I use that I ask ya! Perhaps I just didn't want to mess with it dunno but it would have worked much better if I'd gone to a darker purple before hitting the black and then even into a purple with black instead? WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:33 PM

I can tell you that done properly with the PROPER color choices this does work. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:33 PM Which is one of the main reasons I wanted to share this technique with you. jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:33 PM t's a good idea that's for sure jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:33 PM :'s a good idea that's for sure WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:34 PM randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:34 PM

That's a great idea. And we all have stash waiting to be put to use! WendyMcD September1,2012 3:34PM

1 stubborn color that just wont work but you want it to work... you keep working it 7 of the handout. jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:35 PM or like me several years ago knitpicks had a deal where you could get all 50 colors in one bag WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:35 PM

: working the color changes notice how different the colors are. Notice that you ha share the entire object with you as it's for my book but it flows nicely in person. jabberpaws September 1, 2012 3:35 PM what i didn't know is one ball of pallete was not enough to do things with randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:35 PM

Is page 7 making longer transitions? Is that why they work Nope,, they are texture, you have k1 p1 with several variants in play. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:36 PM BTW, that IS Palette. I love Palette and if they would stop coming out with new colors I could say I had them all eventually as I have like a massive tote full of them.

randyjen4 September 1, 2012 3:36 PM Hmmm. I like both of them. Fun to play with the colors and figure it out

September 1, 2012 3:38 PM Texture would be my next move with that pink to purple as I'm sure that color will work it just needs the right amount of force. Notice that the blog photo has like rows of blips of just the pink? even though I altered and went k1 n k1 o then k1 o k1 n it still didn't work but I think it would with the technique I dreamed up on page 6 so that would be my next attempt to make it submit. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:40 PM Lastly we have my rainbow stockings which I started years back. Unfortunately I didn't know then what I know now so you will probably never get to see them entoto. BUT here you see yarn that is dye specifically to meld. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:40 PM

Which is expensive to say the least there's just so much work in them. That said we did find one method we can manage and I still haven't shared those photos or any of the recent samples. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:40 PM Any questions? randyjen4 September1,2012 3:40 PM

That's the pic I was looking at when asking about longer transitions. I was on the wrong page!

September 1, 2012 3:41 PM

No questions, I just need to get another needle and start playing. WendyMcD September 1, 2012 3:41 PM In future would you like to see me smash think pink and purple? Make it work and share the results or a photo of me with a birds nest for hair and needles poking out of my eyes cause IT GOT ME! Cendrillon

September 1, 2012 3:41 PM No questions. This was great - really good info.
