A SIMPLE BALANCED RIB FOR THE GUY WHO LIKES THINGS That Are useful, Not thinGs that Are fanCy. (LAdIES MAY ENJOY IT TOO.) And of course you, Gentle KnItter - I know you like A nice easy Knit every now and again.
You will need:
Approximately 400m / 100g of sock/fingering weight yarn. I used a solid for the cuffs/heels/toes but you don't have to. Since it is a simple ribbed pattern you can go as wild as you like with variegated yarn. Yarn used in photos is Kroy Sock in Gentry Gray (solid gray) and Lion Brand Sock Ease in Taffy (variegated) Set of 5 - 2.25mm needles (US size 1) Darning needle Note: Instructions are given for DPNs, but if you are using Magic Loop just place a stitch marker after every 16(17, 18) sts. If using two circs put the instep sts on one needle and the sole sts on the other, and use a st marker to mark the half way point on each. Gauge: 8 stitches per inch Size: This pattern includes three sizes: 64 sts, 68 sts and 72 sts. Roughly Ladies, ladies large/Men's small and Men's.
Abbreviations:
k - knit p-purl p2tog - decrease one stitch by purling the next two stitches together. PM - place a stitch marker sl - slip the next stitch purl wise. SM - slip the stitch marker as you come to it. ssk - decrease one stitch by slipping one stitch as if to knit, slipping the next stitch as if to purl, and then moving both stitches back to the left hand needle. Knit through the back loops of both stitches. st(s) - stitch(es)
Cuff:
Cast on 64(68, 72). Divide sts evenly over 4 DPN, and join for knitting in the round, being careful not tot twist. k2, p2 for about 3cm/1.25" or until desired cuff length is reached.
Leg:
Start Chart A or written instructions. The chart shows the repeat for 16(17,18) sts, 0r ONE DPN needle. Continue knitting until you reach your desired leg length. 64 stitch chart

Heel Flap
Row 1: Work across the next 32(34,38) sts in the following manner: slip the first st, then work the next 31 sts as each one presents from the row below - this means that if stitch #2 is a knit, then knit it. If it's a purl, purl it. You are maintaining the rib pattern that you just finished with in the sock leg down onto the heel flap. At the end of 32sts TURN. Repeat Row 1 32(34,38) times, until you have 16(17, 18) slip sts running down the sides of your heel flap. End on a wrong side row.
Heel Turn
Row 1: sl 1, k17( 19,20) ssk, k1, turn Row 2: sl 1, p5(6,7) p2tog, p1, turn You should now notice a gap between the sts on your needle where you turned. Knit (or purl) until 1 st before that gap. Make your decrease using the next st and the one after the gap. Knit (or purl) one more st, then turn. Continue in this manner until you have no more sts left to decrease. On your last 2 rows you may find that you will do the decrease and then turn as all your stitches will be used up. This is fine. You should have 18(20,22) sts left. Turn and knit 9(10,11) sts onto a new needle. Knit the 9 (1o,11) remaining heel sts onto a second needle. Questions or comments? Just drop me a line!
