Bamboo Waves Socks Pattern: Toe-Up Fingering Weight Sock Design with Eyelet Cuff

Bamboo Waves Socks

designed by Carol Schoenfelder This sock was designed for some My Small Wonders yarn (hand painted by a member of a local knitting group). I liked the finished product so much that I decided to remake the socks in Stroll yarn. I hardly ever make two patterns the same, and so there are some slight changes from the original. The main pattern is adapted from a stitch pattern created by Gail Dennis of sockamaniac.blogspot.com. The sock is worked from the toe up. It has a rounded toe, a slip-stitch variation of Squeaky's Widdershins heel, and a eyelet cuff.

Special stitches:

Knit back and front (kbf): This is like the more familiar kfb except one knits first into the back loop and then the front loop of the stitch. It's used here only for optional increases for the leg.

Directions:

Work toe:

Using a Turkish Cast-On, Figure-Eight Cast-On, or Judy's Magic Cast-On, cast on a total of 14 (18, 22) stitches -- 7 (9, 1) stitches per needle. Knit across the stitches on each needle once. Then, increase 4 stitches per round as follows: Needle 1: kfb, kto last 2 sts, kfb, k1 Needle 2: kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. Repeat this round to 11 (15, 19) sts per needle. Alternate the increase round with a plain knit round to 29 (33, 37) sts per needle. Knit 2 rounds even.

Start charted pattern:

Work from Bamboo Waves Chart on Needle 1. Knit across the sts on Needle 2. Round 1 is: Neede1:(2,3),y,k,y,ssk, ktg,k,y,k,y,ssk, ktog,k(2,3,,k(2,3), s,k yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1 (2, 3) Needle 2: k29 (33, 37) Continue until length is $3\,\%\,"$ (32 rows) less than desired foot length.

Begin gusset:

Continue to work from chart on Needle 1. On Needle 2 make increases every other round as follows: kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 Continue until there are 53 (57, 61) sts on Needle 2.

Turn heel:

Place markers on Needle 2, 16 sts in from the sides - with 21 (25, 29) sts between markers. The heel wil be turned on these sts. Working only on Needle 2: Row 1: Knit to first marker, then knit to 2 sts from $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ marker. M1, k1. (Gap formed.) Row 2: Turn, purl to 2 sts from $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ marker, m1, p1. (Gap formed.) Row 3: Turn, knit to 3 sts before gap, m1, k1. (Gap formed.) Row 4: Turn, purl to 3 sts before gap, m1, p1. (Gap formed.) Repeat Rows 3 - 4 until there are 29 (33, 37) sts between markers.

Work heel flap:

Row 1: Turn, k to 1 st before marker, remove marker, ssk. Row 2: Turn, p to 1 st before marker, remove marker, p2tog. Row 3: Turn, sl1 wyib, k27 (31, 35), ssk. Row 4: Turn, s1 wyif, \* p1, lip wyif \* 13 (15, 17) times, p1, p2tog. Repeat Rows3-4 until alsts on the left-hand-side of the needle have been worked and only one st on the right-hand-side remains to be worked - ending on a Row 3. Start working in the round again. Work the next pattern row on Needle 1, except end with kfb. On Needle 2: k2tog, k27 (31, 35), kfb.

Continue in pattern on Needle 1, ending with p1.

On Needle 2, work the same pattern row on Needle 2 (as was worked on Needle 1), ending with p1. If desired, after about a couple inches, increase by working kbf (not kfb) on $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ stitch and $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ to last stitch of both needles - an increase of 4 sts. (In the next row, these stitches should be knitted.) Continue until the leg is 5" long (or 1" less than desired length), ending on an even row.

Make cuff:

$\ast_{\mathsf{k}}$ to 1st before next purl st,ss, repeat from \* around - fora decrease of 4 sts. Purl around. Knit around. Purl around. \* k2tog,yo, repea from \* around Purl around. Knit around. Bind off loosely: \* p2tog, slip st back to left-hand needle, repeat from \* around. Weave in ends.
