Gauge: on size 15 needles, 8 st x 10 rows = 4" x 4", in 1 x 1 rib Materials: One 26" size 15 US circular needle or One set ten or twelve inch size 15 US single point needles Two balls (200 yds) super bulky weight yarn, such as Lion Brand Hometown USA, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, or Rowan Big Wool Scissors, stitch holder, and large eye yarn needle

Instructions
A good Kitchener stitch tutorial is available here: http:// www.knitty.com/IssUEsummer04/ FEATtheresasum04.html OR: bind off all stitches, and fold hat in half, seam up with mattress stitch, weave in ends. CO 50 stitches Row 1-5: S1, Knit to last stitch, ktbl. This is the front edge of the hat, and you may increase this as desired, for a wider cuff. Row 6: s1, \*k\* repeat up to last stitch, ktbl (right side) Row 7: s1 purlwise, \*p\* repeat to end (wrong side) Repeat rows 6 and 7 twelve more times. Along bottom edge of hat, pick up and knit 39 stitches, it should be easy to see where to pick up in each slipped stitch along this edge. The exact number will not matter, but you will need to have an odd number of stitches on yourneedles. Pointy top version (shown): Row 1: s1, k2tog, k21, kfb, kbf, k21, ssk, ktbl Row 2: s1 purlwise, purl across Repeat these 2 rows two more times. Row 1: (wrong side) \*p1, k1\* to last stitch, p last stitch Row 2: (right side) \*k1, p1\* to last stitch, k last stitch Row 3: repeat row 1 Row 4: repeat row 2 Row 5: repeat row 1 Flat top version: Repeat rows 6 and 7 from above three more times. Both versions: Knit one more row straight across, arrange stitches so that 25 are on each needle, or at each end of the circular needle for kitchener stitch. FOR BRAIDED TIES: bind off edge in pattern, then cut six lengths of yarn 2-4 feet long, twice the length of desired ties. On bottom edge, pull one length of yarn through each of the first and last three stitches. Pull yarn through so that ends are even, and holding two strands together for each braid section, braid together, and knot at the ends. FOR KNITTED TIES: Knit first six stitches, place on a stitch holder, bind off 13, knit last six stitches. Knit 40 rows in stockinette or garter stitch on the last six stitches that are still on the needle, bind off these six. Place stitches from holder back on needles, knit 40 rows of stockinette or garter, bind off. If desired, cut twelve 8 inch lengths of yarn for fringe, put six on the end of each tie. Weave in any remaining loose ends.
