sk: skip st: stitch ch: chain sp: space sl st: slip stitch sc: single crochet dc: double crochet (yarn over once before inserting into indicated stitch) trc: treble crochet (yarn over twice before inserting into indicated stitch) dbltrc: double treble crochet (yarn over three times before inserting into indicated stitch). See notes. dbltrc—if the top of your stitch is loose, one way to prevent this is to yo 2 times, work to last two loops, remove first loop and hold it, use the slack between the stitches to create a 3'd loop, (yo, pull through two loops) x 2 dc3tog: double crochet 3 together (\*yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pullthrough, yarn over, pull through two loops\*, repeat from \* to \* 2 more times—over 3 stitches total, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook)
Instructions
Round 1: With color A, ch2, 8 sc into 2rd ch from hook, sl st to beg sc. (8 sc) Round 2: Ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (16dc) Round 3: Ch3, dc in same st, 2dc in each st around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (32dc) Round 4: Ch1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each st around, sl st to beg sc. (32sc) Round 5: (chain loosely or your peaks willean) \*Ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, trc in next ch, sk 2 sc on Rnd 4, sl st loosely in next 2 sc\*, repeat from \* to \* 7 times, last sl st will be into sl st from round 4. Finish off color A. (8 sun rays, 16 sl sts) Round 6: (see notes on dbltrc) Join color B with a sl st to any 1st sl st after a sun ray, ch5 (as dbltrc), 2 dbltrc in same st, 3 dbltrc in next sl st, sc in top loop of sun ray, (3 dbltrc in each of next 2 sl st, sc in top loop of sun ray) 7 times, sl st to 5th ch of beg ch-5. Finish off color B. (48 dbltrc, 8 sc) Round 7: Join color C with sl st to any sc, ch4, (2 trc, ch2, 3trc) in same st, \*trc in next st, dc in next 2 st, hdc in next 2 st, sc in next 3 st, hdc in next 2 st, dc in next 2 st, trc in next st \*\*, corner as (3trc, ch2, 3trc) in next st (tip of star)\*, repeat from \* to \* 2 times and from \* to \*\* once, sl st to top of beg ch4. (116 sc) Round 9 could also be worked as hdc or dc for size. If you go up to dc, in the corners, use (2dc, ch2, 2dc), and your final count willbe 120 dc, and 4 ch-2 sp. This photo is mugginsquilts' version, and it has the sc center, dc final round, but a different color arrangement. She also used the alternate 'dbltrc' on Round 6 and found it pretty easy and effective for avoiding big loops.
