Double knit U of M cowl

Double knit U of M cowl- pattern uses color work and chart reading skills. The chart is worked from right to left. CO 146 sts. Count 1 gold st., 1 blue st. not as 2, but as 1 as you cast on. This way, you will have a cowl that is 146 sts. On the gold s and 146 sts on the blue side. If you count 1 gold, 2 blue, 3gold, etc. you will end up with 78 sts only, that that could be a snug hat. This pattern is made in the round, so you will always think of your primary (gold) as a Knit, and a contract (blue) as a purl. Knit 1 with gold (both yarns are at the back of the work), Bring both yarns forward and purl with blue. Alternate in the manner, NEVER forgetting to bring yarns to the back as you knit yellow sts with yellow and to the front, as you purl blue sts with blue. Repeat for 5-7 rows or about 1 inch. Start on the charts. You will repeat this pattern for the first round:(Knit 5 sts in Main color, then start the M-chart, knit 5 sts in Main color, start the Go Blue-chart, knit 7sts in Main color, repeat the M-chart, knit 8 sts with main color, repeat the Go Blue-chart, and finish with 8 sts in Maincolor.)
M-chart
Each sq. represents a single 2 sts (I1 gold, 1 blue). The numbers in the squares are only to help you count. Ex. Reverse 1, reverse 2, reverse 3... all mean knit 1 with Contrast color, purl 1 with Main color. The number tells us to use the odd color/contrast color or Reverse. For example, instead of knit gold, purl blue, we would knit the gold st. with a blue (never forgetting to bring both yarns behind work , and purl the blue st. with a gold, of course bringing both yarns forward, as we do that. Read the chart from the bottom up, from left to right. It's 13 sts high. I use 2 pattern repeats for the cowl.

The strands of different color yarn will be twisted, (or just pass over one another, as you work). This is a good thing. Minimal sewing up will be required. I try to avoid twisting or over passing the colored strands at the edges though, it looks a bit homey. Sewing up can also be substituted with a single crochet edge- that's what I did at the bottom/ cast on. The top part of the cowl is where I bound off, alternating knit with gold, pass st over, purl with blue, pass st over until all 146sts are bound off
GO BLUE chart
Read the chart from left to right. This chart is 4osts wide, 9 sts high. I use 2 pattern repeats for the cowl.
