Introduction
Halti is the fourth shawl in the "Fell Shawls" series. In Nordic legends, Halti is described as a mighty dude, leader of the Halti giant tribe. In reality, the Halti fell is part of the Scandes mountain range, and the highest elevation in Finland. The Finnish half of Halti is located in the municipality of Enontekio, while the rest of the fell is in Norwegian territory. I wanted to challenge myself by designing a lace shawl for men. Everyone knows the problem: lace is thought of as a “women's thing", even though men have been using lace in their clothing for centuries. Despite the lace (or because of the lace) this is a masculine shawl. By changing the color, it also fits on a woman's neck. The shawl is boomerang-shaped. Knitting is begun with the central square. In the middle, the midnight sun is knit and inside a lace spruce, or a white birch leaf made of purl stitches (if the amount of lace scares you). After that, stitches for the wings are picked up from the sides of the square; the wings are knit in garter stitch. In the end, large bobbles are made and attached to the wing tips.

Any yarn with a yardage of about 440 - 460 yd (400 - 420 m) / 3.5 0z (100 g) can be used. In any case, alleftover yarn can be put into making the bobbles...
Yarn
Gray shawl (chart 1, spruce): Knitlob's Lair Vainämoinen (75 % wool, 25 % nylon; 440 yd (400 m) / 3.5 0z (100 g), 3.5 0z (100 g), gray ("Hämy"). Green shawl (chart 2, white birch leaf): Scholler+Stahl Fortissima Socka (75 % wool, 25 % nylon; 230 yd (209 m) / 1.75 0z (50 g), 3.5 0z (100 g), olive green (1090). Yarn can be replaced with any similar yarn of yardage 440 - 460 yd (400 - 420 m)/3.5 oz (100 g).
Gauge
17 sts and 29 rows = 4 in (10 cm) stockinette stitch (blocked). 23 sts and 28 rows = 4 in (10 cm) garter stitch (blocked).
Needles
Circular needles size US 7 (4.5 mm) for knitting. Use size US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for casting on and size US 1o (6 mm) needles for binding off. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Size
Central square size 8 % in x 8 % in (22 cm x 22 cm), wingspan 69 in (175 cm). Single wing width on upper border 30 % in (77 cm). ① 2015 Christa Becker Images and translation @ Stefan Becker
Before you begin
Read the instructions, charts, key and abbreviations carefully before you start knitting. In the charts, odd-numbered rows are always RS rows; even-numbered rows are always WS rows. RS rows are read from right to left, WS rows from left to right. When knitting the central square, always knit edge sts as follows, to obtain a tight stitch chain: on RS, k first and last st; on WS, p first and last st. Chart 1 shows only RS rows. WS rows are knit as follows: p1, k3, P39, k3, p1. The square is knit from the top down. shows RS and WS rows. The square is knit from the bot Pay attention to the square's knitting direction when positioning the wings.
Shawl
Central square
Using two size US 4 (3.5 mm) needles, CO 47 sts. Switch to size US 7 (4.5 mm) needles. Knit 7 rows in g st. Begin with chart 1 or 2, row 1 (RS). In chart 1, WS rows are always knit as follows: p1, k3, p39, k3, p1.

After knitting row 69 (RS) of your selected chart, knit 7 rows in g st. BO using a size US 10 (6 mm) needle as follows: k2, (lift the first st over the last st you knit, k1) until there is 1 st left on the right needle. Do not break the yarn, but leave the st on the needle.
Wings
If you knit the central square according to chart 1, knit the right wing first. If you knit the central square according to chart 2, knit the left wing first.
Right wing
The work's right side should be pointing towards you. If you used chart 1, pick up 64 sts from the square's edge in addition to the one already on the needle (= 65 sts total). If you used chart 2, pick up 65 sts from the square's right edge. Sts are picked up as follows: put the needle through the edge st's back loop and pull the yarn through the loop. Skip (do not pick up) about every 4th stitch. Knit on WS as follows: k2, (yo, ssk) until 1 st left, k1. Knit 2 rows g st. Row 1 (RS): sl1p, ssk, k rem. Row 2 (ws): k2, yo, k rem. @ 2015 Christa Becker Images and translation @ Stefan Becker Row 3 (Rs): same as row 1. Row 4 (ws): k all. Rep rows 1-4, until there are 4 sts left and the last row you knit was row 1 (Rs). On Ws, k all sts. Then (RS) slip, ssk, k1. Finally (WS) k3tog. Break yarn and pull through last st. Leave a sufficiently long piece of yarn on the wing tip, so that you can later attach the bobble.
Left wing
The work's right side should be pointing towards you. If you used chart 1, pick up 65 sts from the square's left edge. If you used chart 2, pick up 64 sts from the square's edge in addition to the one already on the needle (= 65 sts total). Sts are picked up as follows: put the needle through the edge st's back loop and pull the yarn through the loop. Skip (do not pick up) about every 4th stitch. Knit on WS as follows: k1, (yo, k2tog) until there are 2 sts Ileft, k2. Knit 2 rows g st. Row 1 (RS): k until there are 3 sts left. K2tog, k1. Row 2 (Ws): sl1p. K until there are 2 sts left. Yo, k2. Row 3 (Rs): same as row 1. Row 4 (ws): sl1p, k rem. Rep rows 1-4, until there are 4 sts left and the last row you knit was row 1 (RS). On WS, k all sts. Then (RS) slip, k2tog, k1. Finally (WS) k3tog. Break yarn and pull through last st. Leave a sufficiently long piece of yarn on the wing tip, so that you can later attach the bobble.

Finishing
From the leftover yarn, make 2 bobbles around 6 in (15 cm) in diameter: cut all remaining yarn into roughly 12 % in (32 cm) long pieces, and divide these for two bobbles. Fold the yarn pieces in half and sow together at the folding point using the yarn at the shawl's wing tip. Wrap the remaining sowing yarn around the bobble's “waist" and weave in. Wet the shawl, dry with clean towel, block to measurements and leave to dry. Alternatively, you can steam the shawl and leave to cool. Weave in ends.
