Marabou Beret Designed by Ingrid Nielsen INTERMEDLATE
The Beret gets its name not from the Marabou Stork, but from the Swedish chocolate Marabou which I consumed quite a lot trying to figure out shaping of this design. Knitting can be fattening if several bars of chocolate goodness is consumed, but this beret was worthwhile to be finished without a nervous breakdown due to frogging and re-knitting. Size: One size fits all.
Finished measurements:
Circumference 53 cm/20" Diameter of top of beret 26 cm/10""

24 sts $\mathsf{x}\;44\mathsf{r}=4^{\prime\prime}$ (10 cm) in Broken Rib
Broken Rib Pattern: R1: K R2: $\ast\mathsf{K}1$ , P1\* Pattern uses Knitty.com standard abbreviations that can be found here.
Pattern notes:
Please remember when working on dpns that beginning of every needle is considered as if there were a marker. Once changing dpns to circular needles, make sure you insert markers in the corresponding places.
DIRECTIONS
Increases
CO 8 stitches, divide stitches to 3 dpn needles - 3-3-2, K one round placing marker between every stitch. Next rnd: [M1, K1] to the end of round. 16 sts R1: K R2: $\ast\mathsf{\mathsf{M}}_{1}$ , [P1, K1] to next m, sl $\mathsf{m}^{*}$ R3: K R4: \*M1, K1, [P1, K1] to next m, sl m\* Continue working R1-R4. Once you have enough stitches, divide sts to 4 dpn and continue knitting in the round repeating the four rows. If dpns come to short, switch to circular needle. Once total of 208 sts is knit, begin with decreases.
Decreases
R1: $*_{\mathsf{K}}$ until the last st before m, place m, k1, remove $\mathsf{m}^{*}$ until last panel then K until the last st before m. place m (as a result beginning of round moves 1 stitch to right, remember to remove old marker that signalled beginning of round). R2: \*Sl1, K1, psso, P1, [K1, P1], sl m\* R3: K R4: \*Sl1, P1, psso, [K1, P1], sl m\* R5: K Repeat R2-R5 until you have 112 sts.
Brim
Change to CC. R1: $\ast\mathsf{K}1$ ,P1\* R2: K Continue in Broken Rib for 8 more rows. Cast off.

Finishing
From the edge of the center hole, pick up and $\textsf{k8}$ sts with CC, knit 3 more rounds. Next rd: $*\mathsf{K}2\mathsf{t o g}^{*}$ . 4 sts left. Break yarn, leaving a 10cm/4" or longer end, draw yarn with tapestry needle through loops and bring it on the wrong side of work. Hide ends. Block if needed, wear with pride and eat lots of chocolate.
