Gusset-Schmusset Fingerless Mitts By Raveler “Subpolka", 2014

So named, because sometimes you just don't want to fuss with a thumb gusset. Or with picked-up stitches or intricate stitch patterns or cables or tiny needles or anything requiring Deep Thought and/or Concentration. Hence: These here mitts, which knit up lickity-split over the course of a Netflix binge and require little yardage, making them ideal for last-minute, stash-bustin' gifts.

Skill Level: Easy as pie!

Sizing: One size fits most adults. Courtesyof the ribbing, these mitts are super-stretchy. The pair I knit fit both my hands (Ladies' Small/Medium) and my husbands' hands (Mens' Medium) perfectly. Folks with larger hands may want to cast on extra stitches (in increments of four). Yarn: Approximately \~7o-yards of worsted weight yarn. (Shown in Malabrigo Yarn “Tortuga".) If your yardage is a bit short, no worries - just start the thumb hole a bit earlier for a shorter cuff. Using smaller needles, cast on 32-stitches, place marker and join to work in the round. Knit in 2x2 rib (i.e., k2, p2) for 1.5-inches. Switch to larger needles and continue knitting in rib as established until piece measures 4.5" from cast-on row. Knit to the end of the round and turn; for the next few rows, you will be knitting the piece flat (back-and-forth, versus in the round) in order to create a thumb hole. Slip first stitch of row and knit in rib across the interior of the mitt. When you reach the end of the row (i.e., what used to be the first stitch of your round), turn the work, slip the first stitch and work in rib across the exterior of the mitt. Continue knitting flat for 2-inches, ending after an interior row. When you reach the end of that row, do not turn your work; replace marker and resume knitting in the round. Knit in rib in the round for 2-inches or desired length. Switch to smaller needles. Knit four rows in ribbing, then bind off loosely in pattern. Repeat for second mitt. Weave in ends.
