Materials Needed:

White worsted weight yarn Black worsted weight yarn Size G crochet hook Yarn needle Stuffing Stitch marker (optional) Ribbon and black thread (optional) Version 1 Blush: Pink eye shadow (optional) Version 2 Blush: Pink worsted weight yarn (optional) Gauge: Not important for onigiri!! Size: Ifusing worsted weight yarnlik sugested, onigiri generally is about 7 inches. This size wilvary, thouh, depending on the yarn used and your own tension.

Key:

Sc = single crochet Dec1sc = crochet two single crochet together to make a decrease BLO = back loop only Ch = chain Slst = slip stitch

Some Tips:

While gauge is not important, the size of your yarn is. Smaller, thinner yarn will make a smaller onigiri, while bulkier yarn will make a lager one. Use a hook appropriate for your yarn size, but make certain that your stitches are neat and tight. Too loose will make the stuffing show through the holes in the stitches, but too tight will make it infexible, “uncuddly” and appear to be chain-mail! Try and maintain a stitch tension between these two extremes to make your onigiri look the best! For example: If your yarn is soft and cuddly, but when you crochet with it the result is stiff, try relaxing your tension or moving up a hook size. You'll be amazed how these tips will change your amigurumi results!! Also, this is a moderately quick and simple crochet project. It is perfect for beginners, but more advanced crafters can always embellish it! You can add more detail to the features (eyelashes, bows, “angry” marks, etc.), stitch an umeboshi onto the back or even change the colors! The options are endless.

Pattern:

Onigiri Body-- (Pattern is worked in the round.) 1) Using white ch28 2) Ch1 (counts as 1sc this time only), 1sc in third chain from hook, sc across to last ch, 3sc in last ch, do not turn work, continue to sc across backside of ch to last ch, 2sc in last ch, slst into first ch1 of this row (58sc, counting the ch1 as a sc) (Optional: place stitch marker in first stitch in each row now and for every row in body.) 3-6) Sc around (58sc) 12) Sc in BLO to create a ridge (58sc) 8-12) Sc around (58sc) 13) Sc around and declsc twice evenly over row (56sc) 14-36) Repeat Row 13 until 10sc left, be sure to place the dec1sc in different places each row so as to better hide decrease stitch and not cause a ridge to show. Stitch eyes and mouth. (See section “Eyes and Mouth” for ideas and directions.) Also, if using Version 2 of Blush, ad that now, too. (See section Blush Version 2".) Stuffrmly, but leave space at the top. 37-40) Rep. Row 13 until 2sc left. Cut yarn leaving a long tail, pull tail through last stitch to bind off then thread on yarn needle. Add a bit more stuffing to onigiri to fill out the top. Take needle with yarn and weave through remaining stitches and pull opening closed. Top should be a slightly rounded triangle corner. If not, try weaving in yarn a bit more to shape the top. Weave in tail to hide it and cut off remainder close to the body. Seaweed (Nori)-- (Worked fat, not in rounds.) 1) Using black ch26, chland turn (27ch) 2) Sc in second ch from hook, sc across, ch 1, turn (26sc and 1ch) 3-10) Rep. Row 2 (26sc and 1ch) 11) Sc in second chain from hook, sc across and cut yarn leaving a tail. Pull tail through last stitch to bind off then weave into yarn to hide. Cut close to body. Attaching Seaweed Using a long piece of black yarn, thread through yarn needle and knot at one end. Carefully whip stitch seaweed onto body of onigiri and bind off. I put the seaweed on the fHat base rather than the pointy top because I think it looks better. It is also best to hide your knots on the backside of the seaweed (between the seaweed and the body) where no one can see them! Eyes and Mouth-- Using the black yarn, thread on needle and knot at one end. You can use straight stitches to make a variety of mouth and eye combinations. I used two vertical stitches for the eyes and three long stitches to make a triangle mouth. But feel free to try other anime expression styles!

"Happy Onigiri Pattern" by YarnPaint · Page 2 of 3 Blush-- (Optional) There are two versions of blush you can try. Pick whichever you like!! Version 1: Taking a makeup brush or sponge, coat it with pink eyeshadow. Gently dab onto onigiri cheeks until as dark as desired. Lightly blow on blush to remove excess clumps. This version works best in a circle shape and not any others. Warning: This version is the most likely to rub off over time. If this happens simply reapply. It will get on clothing, though. ng pink yarn, stitch on blush much like the eyes. Try whichever style you like be?

Bow-- (Optional) You can also add extra details like a small bow. I stitched my bow of black ribbon to the top side of my onigiri, but place it wherever you like best or as many as you think looks cute! You're all done!! Now it's time to sit and enjoy your cuddly new onigiri! I would love to see what you do with your onigiri! Either post project pictures on Ravelry.com or email me at yarnpaint@gmail.com!
