Ditzy Diagonal Scarf

Version 1.1, Nov 26, 2008 This is an easy scarf designed to make the most of one of my special hand-dyed yarns. Most garter stitch scarves are rectangular, and they tend to stretch and develop a "tongue" shape that bothers me. This is the solution! The points hang beautifully, and the bias wraps lovingly around your neck to keep you toasty warm. (Incidentally, I admit I'm the 'ditz' referred to in the title.) SIZE One size

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Height, Approx 5" Length, Approx 57" (Image is not to scale.)

YARN & NOTIONS

· 1 skein Dollybird Workshop's Therese Oddball $(7\%$ cashmere, $43\%$ $\tt{25\%}$ $\tt{25\%}$ ${200\,\,\mathsf{m}}$ per 125g skein. · 1 set US #10.5/ 6.5mm needles, style of choice · Safety-pin style marker

GAUGE

12.5 sts $=4"$ in garter stitch, knit flat. Because of the bias nature of this pattern, your finished stitch gauge will likely NOT be the same as your test gauge. As well, the texture of this yarn makes counting stitches almost impossible. I suggest casting on 13 sts, knitting several rows, then measuring the entire width of the gauge swatch. Row gauge is not important for this pattern.

PATTERN NOTES

For a simple pattern, I did an unbelievable amount of ripping on this. Until I started using my stitch marker, I'd loose track of whether I was on a 'slant' row or a plain knit row, I'd increase or decrease too much; I was just plain goofy. On the up side, despite its appearance, this yarn does rip out well!

PATTERN

SECTION I: SCARF

CO 23 stitches using the method of your choice. R1: K all 23 st. R2:KFB, K 20, K2tog. (This is the 'slant' row.) Repeat rows 1 & 2 until your scarf is the way you want it, or you are almost out of yarn. In order to keep track of which row you are on, after your first couple of repeats, when you are about to begin row 2, place the stitch marker on the right edge of the work, on the side of the work that is facing you. From now on, when the marker is on the right side, you'll know to work the 'slant' row. Move the marker up as often as you need, and if you don't need it at all, than you're smarter than me! Using larger needle, BO loosely, weave in ends, and enjoy!
