What is Lace?

Lace comes in many forms, but almost all lace stitches in knitting are formed by combining decorative increases with various decreases. Today, we will learn the fundamentals of knitting lace, With these skills, you will be able to produce any number of lace patterns.

DECREASES

We willbe learning a left and a right leaning decrease today, and both decreases will reduce two stitches to one stitch.

K2tog

The easiest decrease to work is a “knit two together? In patterns, this will be written as, k2tog. A k2tog is a right leaning decrease. The k2tog is very easy to do. Simple insert your right needl, from left to right, into the next two stitches. Knit them both at the same time.

SSK

Because the k2tog decrease leans to the right, it's important to learn a matching decrease that will lean to the left."Slip slip knit' is a left leaning decrease, and will be written, SSK. We'll be re-situating the stitches on the needle so they face the other direction. To do this, insert your needle into the first stitch, as though to knit, but simply transfer it from the left needle to the right needle. Repeat with the following stitch and place both stitches back on your left needle. Now knit both stitches together, inserting your right needle into the back legs of both stitches, from right to left,as shown in the graphic.

INCREASES

In general, increases don't lean one way or the other, it's the decreases that push the stitches around. We will be learning an increase that ads a single stitch each time its done and leaves an eyelet, or button hole when you are done. While there are many ways to increases, one of the most decorative is the Yarn Over, which is written as YO.

Yarn Overs are very easy to do. Between stitches, bring your yarn forward, then back over the right hand needle. Work your next stitch as usual. This produces an extra loop on the needle which will be worked exactly like a normal stitch, when you get back to it on the next row.
