Boy's Gone Loopy
By Bethany McRae I wanted to knit my three boys hats for Christmas gifts, but was having a hard time finding something quick, simple and fun in the sizes that I needed. So I came up with this pattern...it's a very simple knit, the colour change row hints at patchwork and the loopy topper is less frou-frou than a pompom, but adds a bit of spunk.

Materials Needed:
110 yards of worsted weight yarn (Colour A) 110 yards of worsted weight yarn (Colour B) SizeUS $8/5\mathrm{mm\16^{\prime\prime}}$ circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge (optional) Size US $8/5\mathrm{mm}$ dpn's for the top of the hat if you don't like magic looping...there's only a few decrease rounds in this pattern, so personally I just chose to loop it. Crochet hook - H or thereabouts. Whatever you like to chain with.
Gauge:
16 sts and 24 rows to $4^{\circ}$ st st
The Pattern:
Pattern written for size Preemie [Baby, Toddler, Child] To fit heads $12^{\prime\prime}\,[14^{\prime\prime},\,16^{\prime\prime},\,18^{\prime\prime}]$ Using long tail method and colour A, loosely cast on 48 [56, 64, 72] sts. Join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist, PM for start of round. Knit for 16 [20, 24, 28] rounds, approximately $3^{\prime\prime}\,[3.5^{\prime\prime},4^{\prime\prime},5^{\prime\prime}]$ Cut colour A and change to colour B, PURL one round. Knit for 8 [10, 12, 14] rounds or until hat is desired length. (The decreases work up very quickly and add very little in height to the hat.) Begin crown decreases: $^{*}\!\mathrm{K}\,4$ [5, 6, 7], k2tog, repeat from \* around. Next round: $^{*}\mathrm{K}\,3$ [4, 5, 6], k2tog, repeat from \* around Continue in this manner until 1 st remains between decreases; k2tog around. Cut yarn leaving a long tail, thread through final sts on needles, draw tight to close.
Gone Loopy Topper:
With H hook and colour A, ch 4, join with a sl st to make circle. Ch 20, slip st in circle. One loop made. Continue making random sized loops, anchoring in base circle. When desired loopiness is achieved, cut tail, pull end through, and sew to top of hat.

Weave in all ends, and you're done!
