Worstedweightwashableyarn US size 7 (4.5mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge Size: 7" square Gauge: 5 (5.5) sts = 1" in Trinity Stitch pattern Note: because worsted weight yarns vary so much in actual size and our goal is to make a 7" square with a flexible fabric, you can choose the gauge and number of stitches to cast on for your bestresults. Cast on 34 (38) stitches using the Long-Tail (aka Sling-shot) cast on method. Knit 1 row. Why are we casting on more stitches for this square than Square #1? Because the Trinity stitch pattern will draw in your stitches creating a more 3-dimensional fabric and using more yarn. So to make a 7" square we need to cast on more stitches.

A Trick to Knitting a Perfect Square: Because the border patterns (usually garter stitch or seed stitch) sometimes have a different RoW gauge than the main pattern stitch, the sides will pull in and you'll end up with a shape like this:

The solution is to add additional rows of border using "Short Rows". At the beginning of a row, work the border stitches as usual, then slip-wrap-turn-slip and work border back to edge. Repeat for the other side border. How often? Well, that depends on your row gauge but I do about 3 sets per square.
Trinity Stitch Pattern:
Row 1: Slip 1 wyif purlwise, k2, purl to last 3 sts, k3 Row 2: Slip 1 wyif purlwise, k2, \*[k1, p1, k1 allin same st], p3tog; repeat from \* 7 (8) times, k3 Row 3: same as Row 1 Row 4: Slip 1 wyif purlwise, k2, \*p3tog, [k1, p1, k1 all in same st]; repeat from \* 7 (8) times, k3 Repeat these 4 rows until square measures 7" from cast on edge ending after a Row 1 or Row 3. Next row: Slip 1 wyif purlwise, knit to end. Bind off in knit stitch.
