Dougal's Polo-neck jumper

Dougal's Polo-neck Jumper
I hope you have fun knitting this dog jumper, which has been designed to be both warm and practical but also simply gorgeous. Dougal was a labradoodle and I knitted this jumper for him as he got older. He was a small sized Labrador so you might want to adapt this pattern to fit your own dog and it is designed to be simple to adapt so it will fit any sized dog. Happy knitting! Tinkerbellknits
Materials
Lovely yarn of your choice but must be acrylic as it will spend much of its life in the washing machine or in puddles. I knitted 3 strands of Robin DK together for the colours but this could be knitted as 1 strand of bulky yarn Knitting needles 6mm (UK size 4, US size 10) Sewing needle to weave in the ends
Tensions required:
This isn't essential as you'll need to measure this to make sure it fits your own dog. You could even vary the yarn thickness and the needle size to give different effects.
Instructions:
It is easier to knit this on a circular needle throughout. Cast on 32 stitches. You need the width at this point to go around their hips and cover their bum a little. Rib (k1,p1) straight (do not join!) for 7 rows. Stocking stitch is now used throughout. Work 18 rows, increasing 1 stitch at each end. Work straight for 14 rows ending with right side facing. At this point the jumper should be long enough to be at his tummy (for a male dog). You may need to lengthen or shorten depending on the size of your dog. If you are knitting this on a circular needle place marker at the start of the row. If you have started on straight needles you will need to slip the knitting to circular needles and place marker. Cast on 14 sts and join. Knit circular till the total length is 16 inches from start. At this point the jumper should be at the back of the dog's legs. Again you may need to lengthen or shorten to suit. CREATELEGHOLES Knit 7 sts Cast off 8 sts, knit to last 8 sts, cast off 8 sts. Cut yarn Leave the first 7 sts on the needle and ignore these stitches. Working on the rest of the stitches only, rejoin yarn. (you should now be working on the largest group of stitches) Work straight for 13 rows on just these stitches, at the same time increase sts at either end on every 3rd row - as k2, inc, knit to 2 sts from end - inc, k2. After you have completed 13 rows - cut yarn. Join yarn to work 13 rows straight on the remaining 7 sts only. (You should now have 2 'holes' created for their legs!). Cast on 9 sts, knit across all stitches to the end and cast on 9 sts. Place marker Knit circular for 4 rows. Rib (k1,p1) circular for approx 4 12 inches, or until the roll neck is now long enough to cover the dogs neck and fold over nicely. Cast off loosely. This is roughly the shape you're aiming for:

I hope you enjoy this pattern and create some wonderful jumpers for your dogs. I'd love to see them. Happy knitting!
