This baby hat design was originally called “Fleur," because of the flowers I planned to add to the sides. But when it was finished, it was unmistakably a cupcake in knitted form, decorated with “frosting" flowers and a swirl on top. The cap is knit top-down, so you can make it as long as you like; use the measurements here as a guide.

Pattern notes
This hat is knitted from the top down. The flower appliques in this pattern are from Nicky Epstein's Knitting Ouer The Edge. Definitions: bfb: knit into front and back of stitch pm: place marker sm: slip marker Starting: Cast on 6 stitches of MC onto the doublepointed needles using the long tail method, and divide evenly on 3 needles, 2 stitches each needle.

Join and place marker. Round 1: \*kfb, pm, kfb, repeat from \* to end of round. You will then have 12 sts, 4 per needle. Round 2: \*kfb, k1, sm, kfb, k1, repeat from \* to end of round. You will then have 18 sts, 6 per needle. Round 3: \*kfb, k2, sm, kfb, k2, repeat from \* to end of round. You will then have 24 sts. Round 4: \*kfb, k3, sm, kfb, k3, repeat from \* to end of round. You will then have 30 sts. Round 5: \*kfb, k4, sm, kfb, k4, repeat from \* to end of round. 36 sts. Round 6: \*kfb, k5, sm, kfb, k5, repeat from \* to end of round. 42 sts. Round 8: Knit all sts. Round 9: \*kfb, k7, sm, kfb, k7, repeat from \* to end of round. 54sts. Round 10: Knit all sts. Round 11: \*kfb, k8, sm, kfb, k8, repeat from \* to end of round. 60 sts. Repeat this two round increase pattern as established, alternating Knit all sts rounds with kfb increase rounds, until you reach 72 [84, 96] sts (24 [28, 32] per needle). Next 4 Rounds: K all sts. (You can now remove all stitch markers except for the one marking the beginning of the round.)
Moss Stitch Band
Round 1: $\mathrm{{}^{\ast}K1}$ , p1, repeat from \* to end of round. Round 2: \*P1, k1, repeat from \* to end of round. (You are knitting the purls from the previous round and purling the knits.) Repeat these two rounds one more time. You should have four total rounds in the moss stitch band.
Ribbing
Round 1: $\mathrm{^{\ast}K3}$ , p3, repeat from \* to end of round. Repeat this round for 1.5 [1.75, 2] inches or to desired length. Bind off loosely in k3 p3 ribbing pattern.
Flowers
(Make 3 of the flowers with the MC, and 3 with the CC.) For each flower, cast on 35 stitches in CC with the straight needles, or in MC with the doublepointed needles. Row 1: $\mathrm{{}^{\ast}K1}$ , bind off 5 stitches, repeat from to end of row. 10 stitches remaining. Break yarn, thread tapestry needle with tail, and run it through the 10 stitches, starting with the 1st stitch. Pull the tail through the 10 stitches, removing them from the needle, and watch the flower form like magic!
Finishing
Block the flowers, and block the hat if desired. Using a tapestry needle, sew the flowers to the moss stitch band on the hat, alternating CC and MC flowers evenly. Optionally, add a small button, a French knot, or other decorative stitching of contrasting color to the center of each flower. Weave in ends. Use the tail at the peak of the hat to tighten up any hole that may exist at the peak, if necessary.
