DIGITS?
design by Amy E. Anderson These gloves are warm, windproof, and durable; great for working outdoors, hunting, biking, etc. There is no difference between the right and left hand during knitting, but during felting, they can be shaped to fit each hand exactly. Gloves sound complicated, but don't be discouraged. If you follow the directions, one step at a time, the knitting is quick and easy. Instructions are for one size to fit an adult man - with additional felting, they will fit a woman. Materials: Cascade 220, Galway, or Paton's Rustic Wool. 2 skeins Needles: Size 5 double-pointed, or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge: 11 sts $=2^{*}$
Directions:
Divide work between 3 needles. For regular cuff: Join and knit around for 44 rounds. For long cuff: Join and knit around for 52 rounds. Begin Thumb Gusset as follows: Rd. 1: K25, inc. 1 in each of the next 2 sts, K to end of rd. Note: Work all increases by knitting into the front and back of st. Rd. 2 and all even rds: Knit around. Rd. 3: K25, inc. 1 in next st., K2, inc 1 in next st., K to end of rd. Rd. 5: K25, inc. 1 in next st., K4, inc 1 in next st., K to end of rd. Rd. 19: K25, inc. 1 in next st., K18, inc 1 in next st., K to end of rd. Next rd: Knit 26, slip the next 20 sts onto a piece of scrap yarn for the thumb, then knit the remaining 26 sts. Continue knitting around on the 52 hand sts for 14 more rounds. Slip the first 26 sts onto a piece of scrap yarn, then slip the last 26 sts onto a separate piece of scrap yarn.
Index $=18$ sts Middle $=18$ sts Ring $=16$ sts Pinkie $=13$ sts
Pinkie finger: Starting at the side opposite the thumb, PU 5 sts from the front holder and 5 sts from the back holder, then M3. Remember, both gloves are knit the same, so it doesn't really matter which is the front or back. If you like, put a safety pin in one side and call that the front. Divide on 3 needles, join and knit around for 12 rds. Next rd: BO all sts. Ring finger: PU 6 sts from front holder next to pinkie, M2, PU 6 sts from back holder, then M2. Divide on 3 needles, join and knit around for 15 rds. Next rd: BO all sts. Middle finger: PU 7 sts from front holder next to ring, M2, PU7 sts from back holder, then M2. Divide on 3 needles, join and knit around for 16 rds. Next rd: BO all sts. Index finger: PU the remaining 16 sts from holders, then M2. Divide on 3 needles, join and knit around for 14 rds. Next rd: BO all sts. Thumb: PU the 20 sts from holder. Divide on 3 needles, join and knit around for 10 rds. Next rd: BO all sts. Felting: Weave in loose ends....you don't need to be too neat, because it will all become invisible after felting. Turn gloves inside out and wash in machine with other clothes, using hot water and long cycle. If they are still quite large, repeat. You may need to wash as many as 3-5 times. They wil shrink twice as much in the length as the width. When they reach the right size, turn them right-side out and put them on (it's okay if they are fairly snug - while they are still wet, they can be stretched). Wear them for the rest of the evening. Make a point of moving your hands and bending your fingers, so that all the folds and creases will be in the right places. For best results, sleep with your gloves on. By morning, you will have a pair of gloves that are custom fit to your hands. It may take 2-3 days for gloves to dry completely.
