ETUS

These socks are made from the toe up, with short row double wrapped toe and heel in stockinette sts. The instructions for the toe and heel are very detailed and should be easy to follow, so everyone with a fear of socks with short rows may beat their phobia More experienced sock knitters may find these instructions unnecessary detailed, and maybe a bit annoying? Gauge: 20 sts in stockinette = 10 cm 13 1/2 rows = 5 cm Yarn: worsted weight, about 176 m Yarn used for the socks in the picture: Gjestal Sportsragg, colour 103. Use one thread with scrap yarn, and one thread with working yarn. Make a slip knot and place it on right hand needle. Hold the threads the same way as for a normal long tail cast on, just be sure to have the waste yarn around the thumb. Cast on as many sts as the pattern says (the slip knot is not included!).The waste yarn will make the "floor' of the cast on edge. Pull off the slip knot, this is not counted as a stitch. Now the knitting can begin! A video demonstrating the long tail provisional cast on can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rf121MG8gQ
Toe
The toe is worked back and forth on a dpn needle. With long tail provisional cast on (or provisional cast on of choice), CO 24 sts on a dpn. Purl first row.

Start short rows to shape the toe: 1) K23, sl last st purlwise, move yarn to back of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. 2) P22, sl last st knitwise, move yarn to front of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. 3) K to 1 st before unwrapped st, sl last st purlwise move yarn to back of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. 4) P to 1 st before unwrapped st, sl last st knitwise, move yarn to front of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. Repeat rnds 3 and 4 until there are 8 live sts in the center and 8 wrapped sts at each side. 1) K8. Pick up wrap and the st and k the two together. Sl next st purlwise, move yarn to back of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. 2) P9. Slip the wrapped st to the right hand needle, and lift the wrapped thread with left hand needle and place on the right hand needle next to the wrapped stitch, then purl them both together. Sl next st knitwise, move yarn to front of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn Work. 3) K to next double wrapped st. Pick up both wraps and the st and k the three together. Sl next st purlwise, move yarn to back of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. 4) P to next double wrapped st. Slip the wrapped st to the right hand needle, and lift the wrapped threads with left hand needle and place on the right hand needle next to the wrapped stitch, then purl them together. Sl next st knitwise, move yarn to front of work. Sl last st back to left needle. Turn work. Repeat rnds 3 and 4 until all 24 sts are live again, ending with a purl row. Turn work. K the 24 sts on the needle. Do not turn! The toe is finished! Now, remove the waste yarn from the provisional cast on and pick up these live sts (= 48 sts). (If the newly picked up sts from the cast on edge is very loose, it may help to knit these sts through the back loop on the first round).
Foot
The foot will be worked in the round. Place a marker at the start of the round. The first 24 sts will be the top of the foot and worked in pattern. The 24 sole sts will be worked in stockinette. (The top of the foot may be knit in stockinette if that is preferred). Sl marker, p1, \*k2, p2\* 5 times, k2, p1, k24. Repeat until the sole, included toe, measures about 18-19 cm. Remove marker. Work pattern on top of foot. Now, the next 24 sole sts will be worked over for heel. (Let the sts on the top of the foot rest on two needles/ scrap yarn or stitch marker.)
