Cowl
cuffed and folded, so start at the lower, inside edge - the part touching your neck - working a Mistake-Stitch Ribbing, change to k2p2 ribbing, ending with more Mistake-Stitch Ribbing for the outside.) CO 71 sts, using a circular or straight needle. Place marker on RS. Mistake-StitchRibbing Row 1 (Rs): \*K2, p2; rep from \*, end k2, p1. Row2:RepRow1. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 eight more times, ending having just completed WS row. (18 rows, total) K2P2Ribbing Row 1(Rs): \*K2, p2; rep from \* across row, ending k2, p1. Row 2: K1, p2, \*k2, p2; rep from \* across row. Rows 3 - 6: Rep Rows 1 and 2. Row 7 (Buttonhole Row): (K2, p2tog, yo) twice, \*k2, p2; rep from \* across row, ending k2, p1. Row8:RepRow2. Cuff (The Mistake-Stitch Ribbing, reversed) Row 1: P1, \*k2, p2; rep from \* across row, ending k2. Rows2-7:RepRow1. Row 8 (Buttonhole Row)(Ws): P1, \*k2, p2; rep from \* to last 8 sts, (yo, p2tog, k2) twice. Rep Row 1 for 212", ending having just worked a RS row. BO Row (Ws): BO by knitting the knits and purling the purls.
Finishing
Fold the cowl so the buttonholes match up. Sew together both buttonholes using a whipstitch or buttonhole stitch. Sew buttons on the other end to match with buttonholes.
Hat
(The hat's cuff is knitted flat, with the cap joined in the round.) Cuff CO 71 sts, using 16" circular needle or DPNs. Ribbing Row: \*k2, p2; rep from \*, end k2, p1. Turn. Repeat the Ribbing Row till cuff measures 31/2". Next Row: BO 9 sts at beginning of row, by knitting the knit sts and purling the purl sts. Knit to end of row. (62 sts) Join in the round, placing sts on 16" circular needle or DPNs. Mark beginning of round. Next Row: \*(K8, k2tog) twice, k9, k2tog; rep from \* once. (56 sts) Knit in stockinette stitch for 7" from beginning of stockinette stitch section.
Shape Top
(Change to DPNs when needed.) Rnd 1: \*K6, k2tog; rep from \* to end. (49 sts) Rnd 2 and all even rounds: Knit. Rnd 3: \*K5, k2tog; rep from \* to end. (42 sts) Rnd 5: \*K4, k2tog; rep from \* to end. (35 sts) Rnd 7: \*K3, k2tog; rep from \* to end. (28 sts) Rnd 9: \*K2, k2tog; rep from \* to end. (21 sts) Rnd 11: \*K1, k2tog; rep from \* to end. (14 sts) Rnd 13: K2tog across all sts. (7 sts) Cut yarn, leaving a 12" tail. Draw yarn through remaining 7 stitches. Pull tightly. Weave in ends. Sew buttons to cuff. Mittens (Make 2)
Cuff CO 28 sts on 3 DPNs. Join in the round being careful not to twist. Mark beginning of round. Rnd 1: \*K2, p2; rep from \* to end. Rnd 2: P1, \*k2, p2; rep from \*, end k2, p1. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until cuff measures 21/2".
Hand
Decrease Rnd: Decrease 3 sts evenly on round, while changing to stockinette stitch. (25 sts) Knit 3rnds.
Thumb Gusset
Rnd 3: Knit to marker, slip marker, M1L, knit to marker, M1R, slip marker, knit to end. Next Rnd: Knit to marker, place gusset sts on stitch holder or piece of yarn, removing markers. CO 1 stitch over gap left by removing gusset stitches. Knit to end of round. (25 sts) Work in stockinette stitch for 31/2 " or desired length to little finger nail. (The top shaping will measure 11/2".) Dec 1 stitch in last round. (24 sts)
Shape Top
Rnd 1: \*Ssk, k8, k2tog; rep from \* once. (20 sts) Rnd 2: \*Ssk, k6, k2tog; rep from \* once. (16 sts) Rnd 3: \*Ssk, k4, k2tog; rep from \* once. (12 sts) Rnd 4: \*Ssk, k2, k2tog; rep from \* once. (8 sts) Place first 4 stitches on one DPN, and last 4 stitches on another DPN. Cut yarn, leaving an 18" tail. Graft top closed using Kitchener Stitch.
Thumb
Place 9 gusset stitches on 3 needles; pick up and knit 1 stitch over gap. Join in round. (10 sts) Knit even on every round to top of thumbnail, about 7 rnds.
Decrease Rounds
Rnd 1: (K2tog, k1) twice, k2tog, k2. (7 sts) Rnd 2:Knit. Rnd 3: Dec 3 sts evenly spaced. (4 sts) Cut yarn, leaving a 12" tail. Draw yarn through remaining stitches. Pull tightly. Weave in ends. Sew buttons to outer edge of cuff.
