HONSVEH KNITS
FlIP-TOP MITTENS

These mittens are perfect for those times when you want to use your fingers but not expose your whole hand to the freezing temperatures. The glove portion is knit first, and then stitches are picked up to complete the "flip-top". Directions are included for a solid-color mitten and one with a simple Fair Isle pattern.
Materials
Rowan Felted Tweed (50% Merino Wool, 25% Alpaca, 25% Viscose; 191 yds./175m.), 2 balls Paisley #171 for solid color mittens; or 1 ball each of Grey Mist #164 (MC), Maritime #167 (CC1), Phantom #153 (CC2) for Fair Isle mittens One set of five double-pointed needles, size 3 (3.25mm), or size to get gauge stitch markers small amount of cotton yarn as waste yarn stitch holders (2) scissors darning needle Gauge - 6 sts/in, stockinette stitch, for woman's medium

Solid Color Mittens
Left Hand Mitten
Cuff
CO 36 sts, dividing the stitches evenly over 4 needles. (9 sts each needle) Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Purl 4 rounds. Knit 15 rounds. Purl 3 rounds.
Hand
Knit the next round, increasing 3 sts on each needle as follows: K1, kf&b, k2, kf&b, k2, kf&b, k1. Rep on all 4 needles. (12 sts each needle. 48 sts total) Mark beginning of next round by placing a locking marker or coiless safety pin in the mitten fabric. Work even for 23/4" from purl ridge. NoTE: The beginning of the round is the pinky finger edge.
Thumb Opening
Knit 15 sts across palm. Using approx. 8" waste yarn, knit 7 sts. Slip those 7 sts back on the left-hand needle and knit them again with the mitten yarn. Continue to end of round by knitting 26 sts. (These thumb sts will be picked up and worked later.) Workevenfor 4rounds. Purl Ridge Round: K24, p24. (This will give the mitten back a nice purl ridge for picking up stitches for mitten top.) \*\*\* Work even for 11 rounds. : yarn. Thumb
With stitch holders at top, slip a needle tip into the 7 sts below the waste yarn. With another needle slip into the 7 sts above the waste yarn. Carefully remove waste yarn. Join mitten yarn at bottom needle and knit one round, picking up 1 st at first opening and 2 sts at second opening. (17 sts) Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Work even for 19 rnds. [K2tog] 8 times, k1. (9 sts) Knit one rnd. K1, [k2tog] 4 times. (5 sts) Cut yarn and draw through the rem 5 sts. Weave in ends.
Index Finger
Slip 6 sts from palm on one needle and 6 sts from back on another needle. Join yarn at palm and knit one round, and using the e-wrap method CO 3 sts in the space between the Index Finger and the Middle Finger. (15 sts) Divide the sts evenly on 3 needles.Work even for 12 rounds. Purl one round. Knit one round. Purl one round. BO all sts. Weave in ends.
Middle Finger
Slip 7 sts from palm on one needle, and 7 sts from back on another needle. Join yarn at palm and knit one round, picking up 3 sts at base of Index Finger, and using e-wrap method CO 2 sts in the space between the Middle Finger and Ring Finger. (19 sts) Divide the sts evenly on 3 needles. K7, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k7. (17 sts) Work even for 13 rnds. Purl one round. Knit one round. Purl one round. BO all sts. Weave in ends.
Ring Finger
Slip 6 sts from palm on one needle, and 6 sts from back on another needle. Join yarn at palm and knit one round, picking up 4 sts at base of Middle Finger, and using e-wrap method CO 4 sts in the space between the Ring Finger and Pinky Finger. (20 sts) Divide the sts evenly on 3 needles. K6, [k2tog] twice, k6, [k2tog] twice. (16 sts) Work even for 12 rounds. Purl one round. Knit one round. Purl one round. BO all sts. Weave inends.
Pinky Finger
Slip 5 sts from palm on one needle, and 5 sts from back on another needle. Join yarn at palm and knit one round, picking up 3 sts at base of Ring Finger. (13 sts) Divide the sts evenly on 3 needlees. Top of Mitten
Pick up 24 sts in the bottom "bumps" of purl row on back of mitten. Using the knitted cast-on method, CO 24 sts. Divide sts evenly on 4 needles. Join in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. (48 sts) Mark beginning of round. Knit one round. Knit 24, purl 24. Knit one round. Knit 24, purl 24. Work even for 28 rounds. (Lengthen or shorten here. The end of the mitten top is 11/2" from this point.)
Decrease Rounds
Rnd 1: \*ssk, k20, k2tog across back of mitten. Rep from \* across palm. (44 sts) Rnd 2: \*ssk, k18, k2tog across back of mitten. Rep from \* across palm. (40 sts) Rnd 3: \*ssk, k16, k2tog across back of mitten. Rep from \* across palm. (36 sts) Continue in established decrease pattern until 4 sts, total, remain. Cut yarn and draw through the rem sts. Weave inends.
Right Hand Mitten
Follow Left Hand Mitten directions to Thumb Opening. At beginning of round k26, k7 with waste yarn, slip the 7 sts back to the left-hand needle, k22 to end of round. Knit 4 rounds. Purl Ridge Round: P24, k24. Now follow the directions for the Left Hand Mitten from \*\*\* to the end.
Fair Isle Mittens
Chart A
(Follow directions for Solid Color Mittens as needed.)

Cuff
Using Main Color, CO 36 sts, dividing the stitches evenly over 4 needles. (9 sts each needle) Join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Purl 4 rounds. Follow 15 rnds of Chart A, repeating pattern 9 times. Purl 3 rounds.
Hand
Knit the next round, inc 3 sts on each needle as follows: K1, kf&b, k2, kf&b, k2, kf&b, k1. Rep on all 4 needles. (12 sts each needle. 48 sts total) Mark beginning of next round by placing a locking marker or coiless safety pin in the mitten fabric. Follow 10 rnds of Chart B, repeating pattern 12 times. Placing thumb opening in Round 12 of Chart C, complete 16 rnds of Chart C, repeating pattern 4 times. Then using MC, work Purl Ridge Round and complete the thumb and fingers. Repeat 9 times
Top of Mitten
Using MC follow the directions for Top of Mitten, beginning Chart B after last purl at the palm. After completing Chart B the second time, knit 18 rounds and continue to the end with directions for Top of Mitten.
