Kerfuffle is a silly shawlette, or maybe it's a scarf, I'm not exactly sure. However, when I saw those 2 skeins of Malabrigo Worsted in Halcyon Yarns last week, I knew they were meant for me, and meant to be joined together by me in a long "something-or-other." I clutched them to my bosom, looking warily around the store, wondering why some other crazed yarn fanatic had not grabbed them first. There was only one of each, and I knew it was DESTINy! I was prepared to fight for them if I had to, but luckily all I had to do was quickly pay for them and leave the store quietly. For those of you who only crochet, I apologize, but I NEEDED to knit the ground in garter stitch: could not help myself. But EffinEffie has created instructions for a completely crocheted version of Kerfuffle, which is now in this pattern, following the knit version!

THE GROUND (Body) of KERFUFFLE SHAWL in KNIT

(There will be one straight edge and one zig-zag edge with eyelets every 4th row.) Using size 10 knitting needles, cast on 1 lonely little stitch with Color A.

Initial 70 Row Increase Section

Pattern illustration

Row 1: Kfb. (2 sts) Row 2: K1, yo, k1. (3 sts) Row 3-5: Knit. Row 6: K1, yo, k2. (4 sts) Row 7-9: Knit. Row 10: K1,yo, k3. (5 sts) Rows 11-13: Knit. Row 14: K1, yo, K to end of row. (6 sts) Repeat Rows 11-14 fourteen more times, increasing one stitch every 4th row, until there are 20 sts across the row. 20 Row Decrease section (every 4th row decreases one stitch) Knit 3 rows. Decrease Row with Eyelet Hole: K2 tog, yo, k2tog, k to end of row. Work these 4 rows a total of 5 times until there are 15 sts across the row. Then proceed to below 20 Row Increase section. 20 Row Increase section (every 4th row increases one stitch) Knit 3 rows. Increase Row: K1, yo, K to end of row. Work these 4 rows a total of 5 times until there are 20 sts across the row. Then work the above 20 Row Decrease section. Alternate working the Decrease and Increase sections for a total of 8 times, which will create 9 peaks at the shawl bottom edge (or make as many peaks as you wish).

Final 70 Row Decrease Section

Knit 3 rows. Decrease Row with Eyelet Hole: K2 tog, yo, k2tog, k to end of row. Work these 4 Rows a total of 17 times until there are 3 sts across the row. Next row: K1, k2tog. (2 sts) Last row: K2tog. (1 sts) Finish off.

End of Knit version of Kerfuffle.. THE GROUND (Body) of KERFUFFLE in CROCHET

The body is worked sideways from one end to the other with a series of increases and decreases to create the zigzag shape. With four exceptions. all decreases and increases are worked every third row. Even rows begin at the Straight Edge; odd rows begin at the Zigzag Edge. Increases and decreases are made in the 2nd sc from the Zigzag Edge.

Pattern illustration

First End

With H hook and DK yarn, chain 2, sc into 2nd ch from hook. Ch1, turn. (1 sc) Row 1: Work 2 scs into sc. Ch1, turn. (2 scs) Row 2: Work 2 scs in each sc. Ch1, turn. (4 scs) Row 3-4: Work even. (4 scs) Row 5: (Mark first sc to indicate zigzag edge) Sc in 1st sc, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in remaining 2 scs. Ch1, turn. (5 scs) Row 6-7: Sc across. Ch1, turn. (5 scs) Row 8: Sc to last 2 scs, work 2 scs in next sc, sc in last sc. Ch1, turn. (6 scs) Row 9-10: Work even. (6 scs) Row 11: Sc in 1st sc, work 2 scs in next sc, sc to end of row. Ch1, turn. (7 Scs) Row 12-13: Work even on 7 scs.. Rows 14-22: Repeat Rows 8-13 until there are 10 scs. Rows 23-27: Work even on 10 scs for 5 more rows. Dows.2o.A2:.Cohtinuoinonoogino.osbofonountil+bono.ono.15.aog. Rowszo-4z:confinueincredsingdsbeforeunfifherearei5scs. Pows43-47:work.even.on15scsfor5morerows. Rows 48-62: Inc one sc every third row until there are 20 scs. Rows 63-64: Work even on 20 scs for 2 more rows. First end is now complete and the zigzags commence.

Pattern illustration

Zigzags

Decrease one stitch every 3rd row until there are 15 scs: ZRow 1: Sc in 17 scs, sc2tog, sc. Ch1, turn. (19 scs) ZRow 2-3: Work even for 2 rows ZRow 4: Sc in 1st sc, sc2tog, sc across. Ch1, turn (18 scs) ZRow 5-6: Work even ZRow 7: Sc in 15 scs, sc2tog. sc. Ch1, turn. (17 scs) Work in this manner until there are 15 scs. Work even for 2 rows. Inc every 3rd row until there are 20 scs. Work even for 2 rows. Dec every 3rd row until there are 15 scs. Work even for 2 rows.

Pattern illustration

Work zigzags until there are half as many as needed for entire scarf, stopping at 20 scs.

Other End

Work even for 2 rows (20 scs). Decrease every 3rd row until there are 15 scs. Work even for 5 rows. Decrease every 3rd row until there are 10 scs. Work even for 5 rows. Decrease every 3rd row until there are 4 scs. Work even for 2 more rows. Ch 1, turn, work sc2tog in both stitches. (2 scs) Ch 1, turn, work sc2tog. (1 sc) Break yarn. If your scarf has curled, you may want to do an extremely light interim blocking. Using a few pins and a spray bottle, spray lightly & pin to encourage it to flatten out enough that you don't have to wrassle with it while hooking the edging. Using DK yarn, my scarf managed to grow to 7.5' after blocking(!) Feel free to eliminate peaks if you want yours shorter. Each peak measure 8.5" on my scarf.

Edging

This edging accommodates fewer rows between peaks than the knit version. Using I crochet hook and color B, join yarn at either one of the ends. Work across zigzag edge as follows: Row 1: Ch1, sc in end of row, ch2, \*sk 1 row, sc in next,ch2; rep from \* until approaching row prior to 1st peak, \*\*sc in row before peak, ch4, sc in row after peak, (ch2, sc in row) 4 times, (sc in row, ch2) 4 times; rep from \*\* to last peak, sc in row before peak, ch4, sc in row after peak, (ch2, sk 1 row, sc in next) across to Iast row, ch2, sc in last row. Row 3: Ch1, turn. \*Sc in ch-sp, (sc,ch4,sc) in next ch-sp: rep from \* until 2 ch-sps before peak ch-sp, \*\*sc in ch-sp, ch6, sc in next ch-sp, ch10, skip (sc,peak ch-sp,sc), sc in ch-sp after peak ch-sp, ch6, sc in ch-sp, in next ch-sp work (sc,ch4,sc), sc in ch-sp, ch1, skip 2 scs in valley, sc in ch-sp, in next ch-sp work (sc,ch4,sc); rep from \*\* to 2 ch-sps before last peak ch-sp, sc in ch-sp, ch6, sc in next ch-sp, ch10, skip (sc,peak ch-sp,sc), sc in ch-sp after peak ch-sp, ch6, \*\*\*sc in ch-sp, (sc,ch4,sc) in next ch-sp: rep from \*\*\*to end, then working in ground of shawl, work around corner with: sc, sc,ch4,sc.
