pattern:
before you start - some notes on size: these socks fit a wide range of feet sizes because they are really stretchy - not that twisted stitches by themselves would be stretchy but because the patterns are arranged in vertical columns so as to form a sort of large ribbing that stretches and bounces back as needed. if you fear the socks will be too tight on you all the same (or if you knit very tightly) then choose a yarn that's on the thicker side of fingering and will give you a larger gauge (7 to 7.5 sts/inch instead of the 8sts/inch the pattern calls for). you'll need a bit more yardage than with thinner yarn. there are 2 sizes given for the heels: a smaller one for slender feet and/ or low insteps and a larger one for all other feet sizes and/or high insteps.
leg:
loosely cast on 80 sts and join to start working in the round. start working the leg chart. work each chart line twice to complete 1 round on your needles. work rounds 1-43 of the leg chart once, then work rounds 4-24 once more (yes that's correct, the second time you start at round 4!). cuff plus leg are now about 6 inches /15.5cm long.

leg chart:

heel set-up: work the next 43 sts stitches like this: ktbl4, p1, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]twice, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]3times, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]3times, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]twice, ktbl, p2tog, ktbl, pl, ktbl. then put the next 40 sts on hold, the will be worked for instep later. the 35 sts still remaining on your needles are your heel sts. turn you work so the wrong side is facing you and start the heel:
heel flap:
WS: [sl yf, k1] 17times, sl yf, turn RS:[ktbl, p1] 17times, ktbl, turn for slender feet and/ or low insteps: work these 2 rows 16 times all together (32 rows total). for all other feet sizes and/or high insteps: work these 2 rows 18 times all together (36 rows total).
turn heel:
WS: sl yf, p19, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sl yb, k6, ssk, kl, turn

WS: sl yf, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sl yb, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, kl, turn ese last 2 rows until all sts have been worked. don't turn after last RS row (21 sts remain) gusset setup: (numbers for larger heel size are given in parentheses) pick up and knit 17(19) sts along side of heel flap, pick up one more st between flap and instep and ktbl it. continue by working all 40 held instep sts as they appear (i.e. purl the purls, ktbl the ktbls), then pick up 1 st between instep and heel flap and ktbl it. pick up 17 (19) more sts along side of heel flap and knit them. knit 38 (40) sole sts (to 1 st before instep). 1ow rearrange sts by shifting the first and the last sole st over onto the instep needle(s). you now have 42 instep sts and 55 (59) sole sts.
gusset decrease:
round 1: instep: work according to instep chart (start with row 1) sole: ssk, knit to 2 sts before instep, k2tog rounds 2+3: instep: work instep in pattern as established sole: knit all sts for slender feet and/ or low insteps: work these 3 rounds 10 times (i.e. 30 rounds total), for all other feet sizes and/or high insteps: work these 3 rounds 12 times (i.e. 36 rounds total) both sizes: having decreased 2 sts every third round, you now have 42 instep sts and 35 sole sts.

foot:
continue without decreasing (i.e. knit all sole sts while working instep as established, restarting at chart row 1 after you have worked row 40). end after having worked one of the following instep rows: 9, 19, 29, or 39 when the foot is approx. 2 inches shorter than desired length. (don't worry if the foot is not quite long enough when you reach one of these rows. that can be fixed after the toe set-up round.)
toe set-up:
work 1 round like this: sole: knit all sts, instep: ktbl2, p1, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]twice, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]twice, ktbl, p2tog, k2togtbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]twice, ktbl, p2tog, [ktbl, p1]twice, ktbl, p2tog, ktbl, pl, ktbl2. now you have 35 sts each on instep and sole. if sock is still missing more than 2 inches to desired foot length, just work some rounds as follows: knit across all sole sts, while working instep sts as they appear (i.e. ktbl the ktbls, purl the purls) when the foot is long enough, start the toe:
toe:
round 1 (plain round): sole: knit all sts instep: work all sts as they appear (i.e. ktbl the ktbls, purl the purls). round 2 (decrease round): sole: kl, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1 instep: p, k2togtbl, work sts as they appear to 3 sts before end of instep, k2togtw, p repeat this 2 rounds until you have 34 sts left on the needles, then always work round 2 until you have only 18 sts left.
finishing:
leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, break yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in the ends. then knit a second sock and enjoy!
about this pattern:
"Die Fledermaus" (The Bat) is the younger Johann Strauss's most celebrated and popular operetta - intoxicatingly melodious and exuberant. Mistaken identities, flirtations at a masked ball, elegant frivolities and confusions of all kinds provide a hilarious vehicle for some of the most captivating music ever written. At the end all misunderstandings are cleared up and the whole company agrees that it's best to blame it all on the champagne. In the cable patterns of these socks you can find all those twists and turns of the plot, resulting in a very pleasing overall picture. I hope you enjoy knitting these socks - with or without a glass of champagne by your sid Caoua Coffee 2014 - this pattern is for non-commercial, personal use only. all rights reserved! there's one exception: you are explicitly encouraged to make or sell items made from this pattern for charity purposes if you have error reports or any suggestions concerning this pattern, you can contact me on Ravelry as 'Caoua Coffee?
