BAREFOOT GALOSHES

Design by Birthe P Translation by Karla Fears Size: Woman's 9 or 10 (European size 40) Yarn: Noro Kureyon, Silk Garden or any other DK weight, 40grams. Needles: 3.5 mm or size4 (Us) circular needle @ 40" Crochet Hook: Size G or 4 mm. Cast on 48 stitches on size 4 circular needles (Magic Loop). Join stitches, making sure there's no twist. Work around in 2x2 ribbing until the cuff measures about 3 inches (about 7-8 cm). This will be approximately 20 rounds. Bind off 16 stitches, leaving 32 stitches on the needle. You will be working back and forth on these stitches instead of in rounds. Knitting the first two and last two stitches on every row, work in Stockinette stitch pattern. You'll knit the first row, pm after 30 sts, k2, pm, knit to the end. Decrease one stitch on each side on the first four right side rows in this manner: Knit 2, SSK, knit to last four stitches, knit 2 together, knit 2. In the fifth row, you will also begin decreasing in the center, like this: knit to 2 sts before marker, SSK, slip marker, k2, slip marker, k2tog. work the center decreases on every second right side row until six stitches remain on the needle. The last increase row (from 8 to 6 sts) is worked like this: k2, ssk, k2tog, k2. You have 6 stitches remaining. This should measure approximately 6 inches (15 cm) from the cuff, which should reach to the toe. Next row (ws), knit all stitches.

Switch to G (4 mm) crochet hook and crochet in sc all around. Begin by working 4 sc in the 6 stitches on the knitting needle: 1 sc dec in the first two stitches, 1 sc in next, 1 sc in next and 1 sc dec in the last 2 stitches. Crochet along the instep, around the cuff bottom edge and down along the other side of the instep. Be careful not to crochet edge too tight (may want to use a hook one size larger here). At the tip, crochet a chain stitch for the second toe (next to the big toe), with 8 - 10 chains. Toe strap can be easily replaced when needed. Make the second galosh in the same way. Put them on and walk or jog in your bare feet!
