Pi Bottom Bottle Bag A Salute to Elizabeth Zimmerman
You will need:
Worsted weight cotton yarn, approx. 37g. (P&C #230 Coral Reef shown) V One stitch marker √ 1 small stitch holder 4 size 6 double pointed needles √ 16" circular needles, size 7 Tapestry needle for weaving ends A copy of Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pithy Directions: Plain Shawl, Circular which can be found in her book Knitter's Almanac Gauge is not critical for this bottle bag.
Directions:
Follow the directions aswritten in the EZ pattern above casting on the 9 stitches using the Emily Ocher method. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of the round and double pointed needles to work round 1 through the round ending with 36 stitches.
Switch to this pattern:
Switching to the circular needle and keeping the marker in place work 5 rounds of knitting. Using the circular needle will be a tight fit at first but will help to open up the Pi design on the bottom of the bag. Once you begin the mesh pattern it will be easier. Continue to use the size 7 circular needle for the rest of the bag.

The handle will stretch from the weight ofthe bottle to allow for carrying it on your arm. Shorten if desired.

Although a regular size wine bottle fits loosely in this bag a large one would fit well. Due to the weight a small bottle will not move around when carried by the handle. Mesh Pattern:
Round A: \*K 2 together, YO\* Round B: \*Knit\* Work this two round mesh pattern for a total of 40 rounds or 20 repeats. Garter Stitch Bag Top: Rounds 1, 3, 5, and 7: Purl Rounds 2, 4, and 6:
Handle:
Purl 6, bind off 12 knit wise, Purl 6 (the stitch remaining on your needle after the bind off counts as stitch # 1 of these 6) and place them on a stitch holder, bind off 12 (the last bound off stitch will slip over the first stitch of the stitches remaining on the needle), Knit back and forth on these 6 stitches, slipping the first stitch of each row, until the garter stitch handle measures 10 inches. This measurement allows for stretch, you can make the handle as short as 5 inches if you want to carry it in your hand. Do not bind off. Place the 6 stitches from the stitch holder on the dp needle. Match the right sides of the bag and the strap do a three needle bind off which attaches the strap to the bag. Weave in the ends of yarn at the inside center of the bag and where the handle was attached. To make a drawstring bag: after finishing round 40 ofthe mesh patteru purl 1 round then bind off knit wise. Crochet or braid a cord approx. 18 inches long and weave it in and out of the topmost Yo holes. Tie or sew the two ends ofthe cord together making a continuous loop. This drawstring wil close the bag and sere as a carrying strap. It also makes a great bag to hold plastic grocery bags to be recycled.

Pi medallion at the bottom measures approximately 3 inches across. Elizabeth Zimmerman made a major contribution to my knitting through her wewsletters and books. This simple bottle bag pattern is dedicated to her. Copyright @ 20l0 Lucile Arnusch. All rights reserved. One working copy of this pattern can be made for personal use.
