Introduction
My small but large-headed son wished a new hat and cowl from Santa; the old ones were already beginning to be quite worn out. Over here, minus 30 degrees celsius happens every winter (seasoned with a biting wind), so the project had to be carefully considered. The garments had to fulfill three requirements: they had to be windproof, breathable yet still warm. Drops Andes was chosen as yarn. The thick yarn and by comparison small needles make the hat windproof. The double ribbing guarantees warmth, and the alpaca wool breathability. The pattern and yarn color reminded me of raindrops (pisara in Finnish). This Outfit is available in three sizes.

Directions
Before you begin
Read the instructions, charts, key and abbreviations carefully before you start knitting. The project is knitted in the round. Directions for sizes 19% in (50 cm) / 21% in (54 cm) / 22% in (58 cm).
Hat
CO 56/60/60 sts to needles size US 10%/10%/11 (6.5/6.5/8 mm), divide evenly among the needles and join in the round. On the Ws, knit 1/1%/2 in (4/5/6 cm) rib stitch (= kitbl, p1). After knitting the last row, wrap yarn around the first st of the next row. Turn work inside Out, so that the RS is now facing you. Fold on hat's lower border: knit 2 rows. At the end of the first row knit the yarn wrapped around the last st (was the row's first stitch before turning inside out) together with that stitch. This way, no hole will appear in the work. Knit 1%/1%/2 in (3/4/5 cm) rib stitch (= k1tbl, p1). Switch to larger needles 7 mm/7 mm/US 13 (7/7/9 mm). Begin with chart 1 and repeat the pattern a total of 14/15/15 times. Knit chart 1 4 times in total. Knit chart 2 0nce. 28/30/30 sts on the needles. Knit chart 3 once. 14/15/15 sts on the needles. Knit 1 row. Size 19% in: (Sl2 as if to k2tog, k1, p2ss0) until 2 sts left, sk. Knit 1 row. Sizes 21%4 in (54 cm) and 22%4 in (58 cm): (Sl2 as if to k2tog, k1, p2sso) until the end of the row.Knit 1row.
Finishing
K1 and slip to left needle. Pull the rest of the sts over, break yarn and pulltight. Weave in ends, steam. Twist a piece of yarn of desired length into a cord, attach to the hat and make bobbles for the ends. Hint: one big bobble bobbing on the top of the head also gives the hat a quite mischievous look...
Cowl
CO 56/60/60 sts to needles size 7 mm/7 mm/US 13 (7/7/9 mm). Knit 1%/1%/2 in (3/3/4 cm) rib stitch (= k1tbl, p1). Begin chart 1 and repeat the pattern a total of 14/15/16 times. Knit chart 1, rows 1-6 2/2/3 times. Then continue with rib stitch (as above) for 1%/1%/2 in (3/3/4 cm). BO as follows: kitbl, (p1, slip sts to left needle and k2tog tbl, k1, slip sts to left needle and k2tog tbl) until the end of the row. Weave in ends and steam.
