Brim:
Attach 2 strands of yarn at side of hat (so that seam is at back). Pull up loop. Row 1: Sc in 26 (30) sts around hat, ch 1, turn. Row 2: Skip first st, \*2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts\* rep from \* to \* to last 2 sts, dec (skip one st), pick up last st and next st from edge of hat and slip st together, ch 1, turn. Row 3: Rep Row 2. Rnd 4-5: Read below before finishing. Skip first st, sc across to last 2 sts, dec, pick up last st and next st from edge of hat and slip st together, ch 1, turn. Work an extra row if you don't think the brim is wideenough. When Rnd 5 is complete, do not "ch 1, turn". Slip st to edge of hat as before and then continue to sc around entire hat. Join to other side of the brim with a sl st.
Band:
Ch 26 (30) sts. Do not turn. Sc in each st to end. Ch 4 (or enough to comfortably fit around your button). Turn 90 degrees clockwise. Sc in each st across to end. Ch 4. Sl st in first sc. Cut yarn. Weave in all ends. Attach buttons to each side of the brim and attach band. Add a pom pom. Shape the brim with your fingers to round it Out.
Variation:
Make up a reversible, unisex beanie by making your size (largest size for men) and omitting the finishing details (pom, brim and band). Simply attach a double strand of yarn to the bottom edge when the hat is complete and single crochet in every stitch for a nice edge.
