Mockery Socks Design by: Katie Grady Yarn: Wired for Fibre Elizabeth ( $100\%$ Superwash Merino 224m (257yds)/50g), 2 skeins of Fig Needles: 2.25mm (US 1) set of 5 double-pointed needles. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge. Notions: Tapestry Needle Gauge: 20sts & 28 rows $=$ 5cm $\left(2^{"}\right)$ in St-st, worked in the round.
Abbreviations:
dpn - double-pointed needles k- knit k2tog - knit two sts together p-purl sl - slip ssk - slip two stitches as if to knit, then knit both stitches together st - stitch St-st - Stockinette Stitch tbl - through back loop yo - yarn over
Cast on 72sts, divide sts across 4 dpn, so there are 18 sts on each needle, join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
K2, p2 around for 18 rounds, then work the following 70 rounds in main pattern as follows: Round 1 - 4: Knit. Round 5:k2, k2tog, k2, yo Round 6: k5, k1 tbl Round 7:k1, k2tog, k2, yo, k1 Round 8: k4, k1 tbl, k1 Round 9: k2tog, k2, yo, k2 Round 10: k3, k1 tbl, k2
Heel
Knit stitches from Needle 4 onto Needle 1 (36sts) turn work. Work 36 heel sts back and forth, in Eye of Partridge pattern, beginning with Row 2, as follows: Row 1: sl1, (k1, sl1) to last stitch, k1 Row 2 & 4: sl1, purl across all stitches. Row 3: sl1, (sl1, k1) to last stitch, k1. Repeat Rows 1 - 4 a total of 9 times, repeat Row 1 once more. - 18 slipped sts along each edge of heel flap.
Turn Heel
Row 1: sl1, purl 18sts, p2tog, p1, turn Row 2: sl1, knit 3sts, ssk, k1, turn Row 3: sl1, purl to within 1 st of turn, p2tog, p1 Row 4: sl1, knit to within 1 st of turn, ssk, k1 Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until all stitches have been worked, ending with Row 4 - 20 heel sts remaining.
Gusset
Slip 10sts from LH end of needle onto a new needle, this now becomes Needle 1. Pick up & knit 18sts along left edge of heel flap plus 2 extra sts at top of gusset. Needles 2 & 3 - continue in main pattern as established, Needle 4 - pick up & knit 2 sts at top of gusset, pick up & knit 18sts across right edge of heel flap then knit remaining heel sts onto Needle 4 (96sts) Round 1: Needle 1 - k to last 2sts, ssk, Needles 2 & 3 - work in main pattern, Needle 4 - k2tog, knit to end. Round 2: Needle 1 - k to last 3sts, k2tog, k1, Needles 2 & 3 - work in main pattern, Needle 4 - k1, ssk, knit to end Round 3: Needle 1 - knit, Needles 2 & 3 - work in main pattern, Needle 4 - knit. Repeat rounds 2 & 3 until 72sts remain - 18sts per needle
Continue knitting sole sts (Needles 4 & 1) in St-st and instep sts (Needles 2 & 3) in main pattern, as established for 80 rounds or until foot measures 5cm shorter than total desired length.
Toe Round 1:Needles 1 & 3 - knit to last 3sts k2tog, k1, Needles 2& 4 - k1, ssk, knit to end Repeat decreases every $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ round once, every $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ round twice, every $2^{\mathsf{n d}}$ round 4 times, then every round 8 times - 8sts remaining. Cut yarn leaving a 10cm tail, using a tapestry needle, thread tail through remaining 8sts, then weave in loose ends.
