Cast on 10 stitches using the long-tail cast on method. Knit in stockinette stitch for 1/2 inch, ending with a RS row. DO NOT TURN WORK. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Using the second needle, pick up and knit 4 stitches, working counterclockwise along the selvage edge immediately to the left of the last stitch knitted. DO NOT TURN WORK. clockwise to the cast-on edge, and pick up and knit 10 stitches along this edge Continue to the last side, pick up and knit 4 stitches. You now have a small rectangle, with a needle on each of the 4 sides, and a total of 28 stitches, and the working yarn is back to the marker indicating the beginning of the round. Round 1 Knit Round 2 K 10 stitches across Needle 1 Needle 2- K1, M1, K2, M1, K1 Needle 3- Knit Needle 4- Repeat as on Needle 2 (total 32 stitches) Round 3 Knit

Move the stitch marker to the new beginning point of Needle 1. Round 8 Needle 1- Knit until there is one stitch remaining, M1, K1 Needle 2, K1, M1, knit to end Needle 3, same as for Needle 1 Needle 4, same as for Needle 2 (total 44 stitches) Round 9 Knit Repeat Rounds 8 and 9 until total number of stitches is 56 (6o, 64). Toe is now complete. Work in stockinette (knitting all rounds) for approximately 3/8 inch before beginning the Instep.
Instep:
Look at your toe, and decide which side will be on the bottom of the foot, and which will be on the top (it may not matter to you, but you may like the look or smoothness of one side or the other). The first needle of the top will be #1, and on from there to #4. For the two largest sizes, move the first or last stitches of the needles so that there are 14 stitches on needles 1 and 2, and (16, 18) stitches on needles 3 and 4. Round 1 Knit Rounds 2-5 Work the 4 rounds of the Stitch Pattern over the instep needles only Needle1- work Stitch Pattern 2 times Needle2- work Stitch Pattern 2 times Needles 3 & 4 - Knit Continue to repeat Rounds 2 through 5 until foot until it measures approximately 5" (5.25", 5.5") from beginning of the toe, when you will begin the gusset. Heel: The heel on this sock is a reversed heel flap type heel. If you prefer another heel type, such as a short-row heel, that can be substituted. For this heel, the gusset stitches are added first, then the heel is shaped, and then the flap is knitted, working decreases to attach it to the gusset. No need to pick up stitches! Boardwalk Socks
Reverse Heel Flap-Type Heel
You will be increasing on the bottom of the foot, at the opposite ends of needles 3 & 4. These directions assume that you are beginning at the right side of the sole stitches.
Gusset:
Round 1: Important - Continue knitting in Stitch Pattern on Needles 1 & 2 while increasing for the gussets! Needles 3 & 4 - K1, M1, knit across sole to last 2 stitches on Needle 4, M1, knit remaining stitch. Round 2: Needles 1 & 2, continue Stitch Pattern Needles 3 & 4, knit Repeat Rounds 1-2 ten (1o) times. Repeat Round 1 one more time. Work across the Instep stitches, Needles 1 & 2 only, stopping at the beginning of Needle 3. You have now made a total of 12 increase rows, and stitches number 8o (84, 88). It is helpful to have the Stitch Pattern completing Round 2, 3, or 4 at this point. If this is not the case, work another round, knitting Needles 3 & 4 even, and working Stitch Pattern over Needles 1 & 2.
Turn Heel:
Knit 9 from Needle 3 onto Needle 2, then place the next 24(26, 26) stitches centered on the heel onto one DPN, move last 9 stitches from Needle 4 to Needle 1, without knitting them. You will now only be working the 24 (26, 26) center stitches. Turn work. Row 1 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 22 (24, 24), turn. Row 2 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 21 (23, 23), turn. Row 3 (WS): SL1 wyif, pur l20 (22, 22), turn. Row 4 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 19 (21, 21), turn. Row 5 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 18 (20, 20, turn. Row 6 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 17 (19, 19), turn. Row 7 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 16 (18, 18), turn. Row 8 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 15 (17, 17), turn. Row 9 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 14 (16, 16), turn. Row 10 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 13 (15, 15), turn. Row 9 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 12 (14, 14), turn. Row 10 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 11 (13, 13), turn. Row 11 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 10 (12, 12), turn. Row 12 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 9 (11, 11), turn. Row 13 (WS): SL1 wyif, purl 8 (10, 10), \*purl into stitch below the next stitch on needle together with the next stitch on the needle, repeat from \* to the end of the needle, turn. Row 14 (RS): SL1 wyib, knit 17 (19, 19), \*knit into stitch below the next stitch on needle together with the next stitch on the needle, repeat from \* to the end of the needle, turn.

Heel Flap:
Row 1: SL1 wyif, purl to last stitch before end of heel, P2TOG (last stitch on left-hand heel needle and first stitch from gusset). Row 2: SL1 wyib, \*knit, SL1, repeat from \* to last stitch before end of row, SSK (last stitch on lefthand heel needle and first stitch from gusset). Row 3: Repeat Row 1. Row 4: SL2 wyib, \*knit, SL1, repeat from \* to last 2 stitches before end of row, knit1, SSK (last stitch on left-hand heel needle and first stitch from gusset). Repeat Rows 1-4 until all gusset stitches have been knitted to the heel. 56 (6o, 64) stitches total left on needles.
Cuff:
Begin the cuff by knitting in the round again over all needles. The stitch pattern should be continued on Needles 1 & 2, and begun on Needles 3 & 4 on the same round of the Stitch Pattern that is being worked on Needles 1 & 2. Adjust the stitch count to 56 (63, 63) stitches by increasing or decreasing as necessary. Arrange the stitches on the needles so that the stitch motifs are easily worked. Continue in lace pattern for 5 1/2 (5 3/4, 6) inches, or until the desired cuff length, less 1 1/2 inches, is reached, ending with Round 4 of lace pattern. If necessary, on Round 4 adjust the stitches by increasing or decreasing to total 56 (6o, 64). Switch to K1, P1 ribbing for the next 1 1/2 inches. Bind off in rib pattern, very loosely or using a tubular or sewn bind-off to ensure that the cuff stretches comfortably over the foot and around the calf, so it should be able to stretch to a diameter at least 40%-50% larger than the cuff at rest. Weave in the loose ends at the cast on and bind off. Copyright 2007-2009, Spirit Trail Fiberworks.
