Working cables without a cable needle:

Left leaning cable: Slip the right needle purlwise through the back of the second stitch on the left needle, pinch below the stitches (so they don't unravel) and slip both stitches off the left needle. Pick up the stitch in front with the left needle and pass the stitch from the right needle back to the left needle. If the stitches before the cables were knit, knit the first stitch, if they were purled, purl the first stitch, knit the second stitch through the back loop. Right leaning cable: Slip the right needle purlwise through the front of the second stitch on the left needle, punch below the stitches and slip both stitches off the left needle. Pick up the stitch in back with the left needle and pass the stitch from the right needle back to the left needle. Knit the first stitch through the back loop. If the stitches before the cables were purled, knit the second cable stitch, if they were knit, purl the second stitch.

Leg:

Work the Diamond Dogs chart through one time then work rows 1 - 23 once. There will be 312 rhombuses complete. Rearrange the stitches as follows. Work the next two stitches in pattern and move the first two stitches from the second needle on to the end of the first needle. There should be 32 stitches on each needle. Now begin the reinforced heel flap.

Heel flap:

[Row 1]: \*sl 1, k1\* repeat to the end, turn work [Row 2]: sl 1, purl to the end, turn work. Repeat rows 1 & 2, 17 more times. You will have 18 slipped stitches on each side of the flap. Turn the Heel: k 17, ssk, k1 turn work. sl1, p3, p2tog, p1 turn work. sl1, knit to 1 stitch before the gap, ssk, k1, turn work. S1, purl to 1 stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1 turn. Continue until you have used all the stitches on the heel. (You should have 18 stitches remaining). Gusset set up: Slip 1, knit to the end, pick up 18 stitches along the edge of the heel flap. Pick up one more stitch to close the gap between the heel flap and instep and place it on the instep needle. Work row 24 of the chart along the instep stitches, pick up one stitch to close the gap between the instep and heel flap. Pick up 18 stitches along the heel flap then knit to the end. There are 33 stitches on the instep and 54 on the heel. The beginning of the round is now the start of the instep stitches.

Gusset:

Make sure you follow the repeats in the grey box for the instep stitches and include the yellow highlighted column for the last stitch. [Row 1]: Work the next row of the chart. [Row 2]: ssk, k to the last 2 stitches, k2tog [Row 3]: Work the next row of the chart. [Row 4]: knit Work these 4 rows until you have 64 total stitches left. (33 on the instep and 31 on the heel). Continue in pattern until you have completed the chart a total of 4 times. Move one stitch from the instep to the heel so there are 32 stitches on each needle then begin the toe.

Toe:
