Delta Scarf Pattern: Quick & Easy Knit with Short Rows and Bulky Yarn

Delta

( http://www.ullaneule.net/0308/ohjeet_delta.html ) Translation from Finnish by Shirina. The crochet-like appearance of the scarf is done by using short rows. Finish the triangles one by one and do not cut the other yarn until in the end of the scarf. In this way you'll have less yarn endings to finish.

The scarf finishes quickly when made from thick and soft yarn. The pattern is quick and easy to remember, but the triangles keep it interesting to knit. Delta was named after its triangles, which resemble the capital letter delta from the greek alphabet.

Yarn:

Linie 130 Champ ( $100\%$ extra fine merino, 50g = \~70m), 100g in ochre (col. 29) 100g in brick red (col. 34) Can be substituted with any bulky yarn such as Novita Isoveli.

Gauge:

15s and 28 rows in seed stitch $\upnu=10c m$ Getting the exact gauge is not important.

Needles:

Circular needle in 6mm, length is not important. You might substitute DPNs, but not the regular needles, for the circular needle in thiswork.

Size:

One size, adult. Width \~12cm; 200g of yarn will make a scarf approx. 220cm long. Note that the scarf will stretch a bit lengthwise when washed and used. When making the scarf for a child, less stitches could be used eg. 16s. Only 50g per colour should suffice for a child's scarf.

Instructions:

Before you start:

The triangles are worked using short rows, which end with twisting the yarn around the next stitch before turning the work.By this you avoid making holes in the work. Below are the instructions for wrap and turn "w & t". When the last stitch before the turn is a knit stitch, do as follows: work with yarn in the back, slip the next stitch on the right hand needle, move the yarn between the needles to the front and return the slipped stitch to the left hand needle the same way as it originally was. Turn the work, yarn stays again behind the work. The first stitch after the turn is always a knit stitch. When the last stitch before the turn is a purl stitch: work with yarn in the front. Slip the next stitch from the left to the right needle. Move the yarn between the needles to the back and return the slipped stitch to the left needle as it was. Turn the work, yarn stays in front of the work. The next stitch after the turn is always a purl stitch.

Knitting the scarf:

Cast on 20 stitches with orange yarn. Knit the first row in Kl,Pl rib.

Slip the first stitch knitwise on every row, but after the turn knit every stitch. When you have slipped a stitch and knitted 17 stitches, ie. 2 stitches left to knit, w&t, work in ptern until th end of the row, and leave the yarn in the upper end of the triangle to wait. Do not cut the yarn! Start another triangle. Move the work to another end of the circular needle. Leave the orange yarn to wait behind the work and start with the red yarn from the other end of the triangle. Work as in the first triangle, but on the first row knit also the first stitch (note that the first stitch is knitted only this once, when introducing the second colour). Work this triangle as the first. Work the other triangles in the same way. When you have finished the previous triangle (there are 18 stitches in one colour and two of the other, from the previous triangle), move the work to the other end of the circular needle and with the yarn left there start a new triangle just as first one. The right side of the work changes every time when starting a new triangle. Continue until the scarf is long enough. Knit the last triangle with the orange yarn. When you have knitted the last triangle to the end, knit one row more with the same yarn to finish all of the stitches (even the red ones): Knit the stitches in seed stitch and pull the previous stitch over the next (cast off as you would). Weave in the ends. Delta in Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/delta-3
