Gauge

26 stitches over 4 inches in pattern stitch This simple cowl uses 100% alpaca yarn that feels lovely against bare skin. The stitch pattern was found in a vintage knitting pattern book for children's layettes, and produces a series of aligned bubbles through the use of dropped stitches. While not particularly difficult, the stitch pattern does require the knitter to drop stitches down several rows, then knit them along with the exposed bars. Knitters uncomfortable with dropping stitches may want to insert a lifeline after knitting the first round of steps 1 & 3. Using long-tail cast on method, cast on 108 stitches. Join in the round, and purl first row. Continue in garter stitch for 1 inch, or for 5 ridges. Next row, knit. Begin bubble pattern stitch.
