This simple moss stitch (seed stitch) cowl requires little effort for big reward and is a great beginner project. The cable cast-on makes a nice consistent stretchy edge that is similar in appearance to the purl bind off. The eco-friendly merino/alpaca blend wool I used was wonderfully soft and squishy, but any aran weight yarn would work, including acrylic and cotton yarns. The pattern requires two x 164 yd skeins of aran weight wool, a 7.0 mm 24" circular needle, and a darning needle to weave in the ends.
Directions:
Cable c/o 149 sts, join in the round, and place a row marker before your first stitch. Work in moss stitch (knit 1, purl 1) continuously until there is only enough yarn (approx. 3 yds) left for a loose purl bind off. Weave in the ends and block if desired. I used all but 2" of the two skeins and didn't block it as I liked the natural bubbly texture (and it was already soft and nicely elastic). The finished cowl is 42" long and 9" wide.
