All That Jazz: A Comprehensive Guide to Knitting Complex Sock Patterns with Ribbing, Cables, and Embossed Leaves

The effect of these socks was described as "ribbing on the bias and cables and all that jazz" - and the namestuck. The leg is patterned with vertical and bias rib around a panel of interconnected embossed leaves. The construction is typical for a cuff-down and flap heel sock until the heel has been turned. The stitches that are picked up along the eye of partridge heel flap are added to the rib pattern and that's when the fun begins. The gusset decreases are made on the top of the instep where they shape the foot and form its pattern at the same time. After the foot is shaped, the decreases continue for the rest of the instep pattern and increases are added to maintain the width. The instep pattern transitions to a stocking stitch foot and a wedge toe completes the sock. The pattern is written for 2 sizes, 64 sts (woman's medium) and 72 stitches (woman's large). Due to the nature of the bias rib design, the socks cannot easily be modified other than using larger/smaller needles/yarn. To have everything work out, the leg is 71 rounds high, the heel flap is 34 rows long and the foot decreases to 63 or 73 sts over 65 rounds. Leg

Using any method, cast on 64 [72] sts. For 1 or 2 long circulars, arrange the sts 32/32 [36/36] for front/back; join and mark beginning of round. For DPNs, arrange the sts 20/24/20 [24/24/24]; join and mark beginning of round. (Note that you will need to rearrange periodically as the sts used for k2tog and ssk will be on 2 different needles.) Set-up round: (k2, p2)x7 [8], k1, yo, k1, p2, (k2, p2)x8 [9] This establishes the 2x2 rib on both sides of the central leaf panel. Starting the chart/directions on round 2 of the appropriate left or right leg, work rounds 2-32, 1-32 and then finish with rounds 1-6 (67 [75] sts).

Medium Size

Round 7: work in established patterns to 12 sts before the end of the round; k1, M1R, k1, work the last 10 sts in established rib (66 sts and the 9th leaf is almost finished). Heel set-up: work 8 sts in established rib, k1, M1L, k1, p2 (67 sts). Place the next 35 sts on hold for the instep and work the heel over the remaining 32 sts. (The instep has 16 sts on both sides of the 3 leaf sts.)

Large Size

Round 7: work in established patterns to 8 sts before the end of the round; ssk, work the last 6 sts in establishedrib (72 sts and the 9th leaf is almost finished). Heel set-up: k2tog, work 14 sts in established rib (71 sts). Place the next 35 sts on hold and work the heel on the remaining 36 sts. (The instep has 16 sts on both sides of the 3 leaf sts.)

Heel Flap & Turn

The decreases are made on the top of the instep to shape the foot and create the bias in the 2x2 rib. Foot

The previous decreases shaped the gusset and pulled the rib pattern in towards the leaf pattern. In this section, the rib will continue to be pulled in but to maintain the foot width increases will be added before and after it.
