No-Nonsense Socks

And, even when eloping - we all need socks! These worsted weight two-at-a-time socks on two circular needles are quick enough that the George in your life won't be exasperated with you trying to finish them on your honeymoon.
Finished Size to fit Women's US Shoe:
6.5 -7.5 7.5 - 8.5 8.5 - 9.5
Yarn:
At least 100 - 300 yards of a worsted weight super-washwool
Needles and Notions:
Two US size 6 (4mm) circular needles Two US size 5 (3.75mm) circular needles Yarn needle Contrasting waste yarn
Gauge:
18 sts and 24 rnds = 4" in Stockinette stitch in-the-rnd
Toe
Cast-on 10 sts with each ball of yarn; using tail, pick-up 10 sts with another circular needle from the purl bump of the cast-on sts Knit 1 rnd Knit 1 rnd; Increase 1 rnd - Knit 1, RLI, knit to 1 st away from end of needle, LLI, Knit 2, RLI, knit to 1 st away from end of needle, RLI, Knit 1 Repeat last 2 rnds until there are 36 (40, 44) sts
Foot
Work until foot measures 6" (6.5", 7") from last increase rnd
Afterthought Heel
Knit 18 (20, 22) sts. Before knitting the next 18 (20, 22) sts, run a life-line through them. Then, with contrasting yarn knit 18 (20, 22) sts. Slide sts to beginning of needle and pick up main yarn and re-knit the 18 (20, 22) sts. Run a life line through these new stitches. For anklets, begin k2, p2 ribbing with US size 5 (3.75mm) needles. Use EZ Sewn Bind-Off when they are the desired length Otherwise, continue knitting until socks are 5 rnds from waste yarn Stop knitting - pull out the waste yarn and slide the live stitches from the lifeline onto the needles Join yarn and work around all stitches - picking up 1 extra stitch in each corner to close up the gap = 38 (42, 46) sts Decrease: SSK, work to last 2 sts on needle, k2tog, SSK, work to last 2 sts on needle, k2tog Work 1 rnd even Repeat last two rnds until 22 sts remain - kitchener heel stitches together Leg Begin k2, p2 ribbing with US size 5 (3.75mm) needles Use EZ Sewn Bind-Off when they are the desired length
